Hi everyone. This is probably a general mechanics question but since it's on my taco, here I am.

My ac belt was squeaking for a while on and off and eventually, it popped so last night, I replaced the belt. Ac worked great all night and all day today until I noticed humid air coming through the vents. I looked down at the AC button and noticed it wasn't on so I pushed it and it still didn't illuminate and the air temperature and humidity didn't change. I got to where I was going with the windows rolled down and I immediately smelled something when the truck came to a complete stop. I popped the hood and the belt was still there. All the belts were tight. There is bits of the old belt scattered around the engine bay so I'm sure they heated up and caused some of the smell. I started the truck and eventually the smell went away with the Ac off. When I turned it on, the smell came back as if the engagement of the clutch in the pulley triggered some rubbing or wear. The ac light will still not come on so that tells me the truck recognizes that the ac is messed up.

What else can I do to diagnose this issue? Any help is greatly appreciated
