Noticed my 2017 TRD 4x4 is pretty sluggish. I only have 500 miles on her, so i'm sure the engine is breaking in on the 3.5. I cant seem to climb hills or incline's on the interstate. I see 2nd Gen Tacomas and other trucks fly past me, the rpm's won't go past 3k (unless I mash it), its hard to maintain 60+ mph. ECT mode helps a bit, but i started notice a humming sound on deceleration. ( almost like a differential or transmission). Maybe it just needs more " break in time" I'm going to drive my friends 2017 sport Tacoma to compare.

I know about the whole 1,200 miles of the ECM and transmission learning your driving habits ordeal.

I will add another Tacoma I drove months ago seemed faster. I'm starting to wonder about this one?Hmm..

Luckily I did a lease to own, so it's not exactly a loan/lien.

It won't break in. That's a myth. You will have this driving characteristic for the vehicles life most likely. This is a common reported complaint on this truck.

You can check with dealer to ensure your transmission software is updated but my experience shows that the tranny learns again and goes back to sluggish performance and poor shifting.

I broke my truck in driving from Texas to Southwest CO and going over mountain trails. I had 100 miles when I left and almost 2500 when I got back. It didn't feel any different coming back then when I went there. You might want to get it checked out or maybe it's just a normal trait of the truck.

just got my '17 trd sport and after about 2k miles it is definitely better. I had the same feelings at first but now even with ect off it is a more responsive truck. Its not going to turn into a raptor but I am now pleased lol

Engines are broken in at the factory. There is no break in.

Its just the computer learning your style for the transmission.

I will add the dealer cut me on a " deal" on it. Essentially it was old inventory and was past their 60 day mark and they claimed they were loosing money. But when I saw it, it needed a car wash. So maybe sitting too long the parts settled. Who knows? I checked the oil and its right where its supposed to be. Could have been bs on their part.

I think they should have used at least a 4.0, my Xterra had the VQ35DE and had way more torque and power. I just came from a BMW X3 with the 3.0 M54 inline 6, again more power than this 3.5 engine on the Tacoma. Kinda sad... considering the chasis is like 4,800 lbs.

Chassis weight has no impact on power output of an motor.

Anyways, sluggish is the norm. It is what it is... I'm keeping my eyes out on a supercharger.

    If I don't pay attention I don't get over 45mph...

This truck has to be wound out to get any response out of it.
