Know y'all have heard this story before. Took mine back in today. After noise in second rear diff. Service department manager drove with me and acknowledged the whine. True or not he said that Toyota had a fix coming sometime in October with dampers to suppress the noise. He didn't seem too sure that this would work. He actually took my truck in and tried a GM lube additive to see if it would work. On my way to work afterwards it still has noise. This guy is over the service department and I hope he is shooting straight about dampers. Know that's a bandaid but hopefully they have something and maybe it'll work. I'll keep y'all posted.

I've been staying in touch with my service dept manager on this and he openly acknowledges that situation (mine is well documented) and has communicated similar information that a fix is in the works and it is not to replace rearends but will most likely involve suppressing/cancelling the whine. He has not provided a specific timeframe but has indicated "it's coming..."

I was googling illusion gifs and came across it.

It was in response to the idea that Toyota is coming up with a fix "soon".

Unfortunately I've become pessimistic about the whole thing...

On that note has anyone tried sawdust in the diff yet? Or is that just for slop in the gears.

I find now that when coasting down a steep grade under engine load, foot totally off the gas, my rear end howls. Good times.

Coasting down steep grades is where the howl on mine is loudest.

Mine is loudest going down hill and pressing slightly on the gas.

Maybe I've never noticed the coasting under engine braking howl or maybe its new to me.

I've put about 4000 miles on this new diff and it has only gotten worse.

Pretty much the same here, going down a long grade kind of coasting and feathering the throttle.

My Case manager from Toyota customer service called today to ask about my visit this week with dealership. I told him that they said a TSB was coming for the issue in October. He acknowledged a TSB was coming but he said it would be closer to November/December. Sounds like there actually is help coming. Hopefully It will work.

I took a trip and drove over 600 miles since yesterday. I thought that heat may play a role in the howling issue, but apparently in my case it did not. The howling in the rear differential did not get any louder after driving 75 miles per hour for 4 hours yesterday and today.

    Well,
I took my truck in for the 10k service and told them the whine was still present.
Got a tech to take a ride with me and agree there is indeed a noise that I'm not just imagining.
Have an appointment on the 1st to go back and get the chassis ears on, then repeat... and go from there.

    I have a question...

Has anyone just said screw it and gotten the gears replaced, and the issue went away?

Or anyone have the issue, go 4.88's, and have the issue go away?

    That is an excellent question.

Doing either would be cheaper then trading my truck in at a loss.
