Someone here tested [some of?] the 2nd gen head units and found them to have a flat signal. Maybe the '16s are different, I dunno. If not, you may be able to overcome any peaks or troughs with the factory EQ (assuming there is one).

I understand you on the factory headunit and all the integrated controls and systems. That's why I'm doing an Arc Audio PS8 for DSP in my currently ongoing install.

Keeping the factory head unit is the way to go IMO. I tried switching to aftermarket and didn't like it at all. Too many of the integrated systems were compromised, didn't work quite right and didn't look as good. I pulled it out, put the stock one back in and decided to do a build off the stock one.

@crashnburn80 appreciate the info, makes me feel better about the route I'm going.
I really like all the integration the truck has.

If at the end of the day all I have to do is buy a DSP I'll be happy.
Felt like I was kinda begging him to sell me one last night, but he seemed sure of what he put together for me .

FWIW there are some refurb JBL MS-8s for sale in the DIYMA classifieds right now. JBL just did an ebay run of refurbs and looks like quite a few of them wound up there. Some good prices too. Might be a good chance to pick up a nice DSP for a song.

Based on the discussion in this thread, how do you wire a DSP off the stock head unit? There are only four available channels for input. Does the DSP allow 5 or 6 channel output on only a 4 channel input? I assume you lose full fader control? Sorry if these are kindergarten level questions, I'm still learning.

    Can't speak for a 2016. But this is how I put 2 10" subs in my 2015.

Hopefully @rob feature @crashnburn80 can answer your question.
I'm a total newb at this and having a little anxiety about my install.

Depends on the DSP. My Helix DSP has 6 in (+ optical in) and 8 out. Using your fader in this situation would attenuate 2 of the channels at a time. You'd 'fade' using the DSP - if you're still using rear channels. I personally don't use rear drivers (except for a sub)

I put in all Fosgate in mine yesterday. Made my own Tweeter mount. Also put in Dynomat stuff on lower half of inner door panel. Sounds great off my Android radio. Only cost me $144 total from Crutfield shipped with free wire harness and speaker mounts for 6x9 and 6 1/2

@airrage where did you mount the amp and how?
I'm worried about that and the under the seat sub.
Hope for it to look professionally done, but this is my first time.

No amp yet, I'm actually satisfied with my Android radio . Not sure yet if I'm doing a subwoofer. If I get bored I might put one in. I'm happy with how it sounds now. Very easy to install on Tacoma. Don't need any special tools to take door panels off just pull with your fingers. Watch youtube videos .

This is what I would do...

If you can find someone to tune the system after it is installed, it will sound 100x better than what the shop has quoted you for.
    It is not even close.

Check out my post called “Decisions”... I paid $150 for component set (Arc Audio XDI-6.2) $229 for Digital Designs D500.5 amp, $179 for Digital Designs LE-S 6-1/2 enclosed sub, $154 for plug and play harnesses from taco tunes, $159 for Raamat sound deadener, and $80 for gently used LC7I. Got a Stinger 4 Guage amp kit for $35 on eBay. Gonna install myself, and that little system came in at close to what u are gonna pay for way less quality! Not knocking you, just saying that if you are patient, and look around for deals, then you can get a nice system! Hell I can send you a link for Kicker 6x9 components for front stage for a measly $60! Rated for way more power than what you have listed. I have some extra gear for a good price if you want it. Arc Audio 4 channel amp (xdi804) and an Audio Controls LC6 I will give you for $175 shipped. (for both) You have a lot of options out there if you look for the deals! Don’t be afraid to buy used stuff! Yeah you gotta be careful, but there are people out there that can help if you need help! Retail stores are gonna cost you twice as much or more for way less if you let them. Due dillegence is key! And no, the stuff I have for my truck ain’t the highest quality audiophile shit you can get and it ain’t gonna win no contests, but it’s all decent gear and it’s all I need. I’ve done the Focal high end in a Ford F-150, I did the Fosgate Power in a Mustang, and I have also done the DB Drive in a Sonata. Spent way more than I had too at retail places and paid labor to have it all installed... probably $10,800 - $12,000 in all. Now I bargain hunt!!! I wanted to get the Hybrid audio high end stuff but it’s a little high for me right now. Mr. Marv has a group buy going on if you wanna go that route. I know it’s great stuff cause a buddy has it in his Ford. Phenomenal system but cost twice as much as I could pay.

    Well guys it's done.
I ended up taking it to a shop to have it installed professionally.
    I'm glad with the outcome.
Gritting my teeth about the install cost $400.
But it's done right and tuned so there's that.

I know I probably didn't get top of the line stuff, but I feel like I'm somewhere in the middle as far as quality.

I did a fair amount of due diligence.
I think as far as research. And I come to realize is that when it comes to brand of speakers, there are loyalist to brands to a degree much like brands of vehicles i.e. ( Taco owners vs Jeep owners or Chevy vs Ford).

Could I have got more for less possibly....probably. But I feel like I did okay, especially with the help/ opinions of all of you guys.

It sounds way better than stock, and when I cranked the first song (my 10yr old looked at me with a huge smile and said "this is sooo cool"

So thanks to ALL of you for your help and opinions and a special thanks to @rob feature @crashnburn80 @NIU_Huskies @airrage.

Glad you're enjoying it. That's what matters most. What you selected is far better than the factory OEM setup. I've been following and installing car audio since 2001. There have been some brands that have come and gone (eclipse, US Acoustics, etc) and there are brands that have had staying power (Pioneer, Alpine, JL Audio, Kenwood, Kicker, Rockford Fosgate, etc.). Unless you're shopping at Wal-Mart, you'll be fine.

All that matters is that you and the 10 year old are happy! Glad it got done right for you and that you got some good tunes now!
