So I have owned a 2013 Toyota Tacoma four-wheel drive TRD sport for over a year now and I noticed a spark knock pinging noise on acceleration uphill or hard acceleration. So I took it to the local Toyota dealership here in Florida they said I had the latest software update and there's nothing they can do about it anyone else have this problem and to me that's a big disappointment for a 2013 vehicle to have a spark knock noise like that

Every engine pings, the ecu keeps it under control so unless you're throwing codes for excess pinging you're ok. My 2013 does it too. So does my Honda and so does my wife's Subaru wrx (my c5 did it as well). All engines do it.

My 2011 used to do the same thing. Under heavy acceleration in the higher RPM's is where it was most noticeable. Started running 93 OCT on every fill up and have not heard the engine knock/ping in years.

Mine got the new update and still does it on regular gas. Now I only run premium

Too bad my city doesn't have anything higher than 91 octane unless you count the random stations with 100 for $14 a gallon. I ran Shell 93 when I went back home (Missouri) for a month and didn't notice a change with pinging however. Every vehicle I've owned has had pinging at some point or another. I'm not saying it should happen all the time or very often but there are certainly many situations that can induce or exasperate the situation... thats all.

I notice an improvement running regular 87 octane Chevron gas

    I've never met a v6 Toyota that didn't ping

Supposedly there is a TSB for this. I have not had it done. Mine pings like crazy on 87 octane when going uphill in 5th gear. Downshifting usually makes it go away, but I prefer to just run 91 octane. I have been running 91 for a little over a month now, and have not heard any pinging since. Also, I always run Top Tier gas. I have tried Shell and Exxon 87 octane, and neither made a difference to the pinging.

I get it fairly often as well, even running 91 octane (the highest you can get here). Its more prevalent when under extra engine load like having the A/C running. I don't recall hearing it when it was new. At just over 100,000 miles now (just getting broken in, haha). Its been doing it since about 50,000 miles. MUCH worse when running lower octane fuel. I'm glad to hear that its pretty common.
