Last night I sold the Toyota truck I've always wanted. In 2006 I bought a single cab Tacoma in hopes to one day upgrade. This past December after loving my 2006 for 10 years, I made the leap and actually purchased a 2016 Limited Tacoma. I loved everything about the look, feel, interior and exterior of the truck. After driving it for a month, I was struggling to get used to the new transmission style of downshifting early to "engine brake" and save my brakes. As spoken about a lot on this forum... the harsh downshifting, inability to coast comfortably or slowly brake towards a stoplight was driving me insane. I found myself dropping my truck into neutral just to have a calm moment where my truck didn't unpredictably clunk into a lower gear. Approaching stoplights I'd be braking with a certain amount of pressure, it would downshift so then I'd have to adjust my pressure and it was constantly lunging forward and back. I trailer boats for work so I'm very familiar with engine braking/trailering modes which work great when needed. If Toyota simply made this feature of the transmission available to turn on and off I would probably have kept the truck. I've never been completely happy with how the truck handled or shifted while accelerating but truthfully the lack of ability to comfortable decelerate is what did it in for me. The transmission/engine configuration on these trucks are garbage. It was a heartbreaking day when I finally came to the conclusion that I had to sell the truck I've always wanted due to a transmission issue that could be fixed with a computer update. Just thought I'd let anyone know who's either looking to upgrade that they should seriously pay attention to whether or not this will bother them like it did me. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. Cheers!

wait, the AT's engine brake? Hmm, I mean I downshift with the MT or slip into neutral often when braking. I have said it many many times here, but will repeat. SO SO SO SO happy I got the MT - never even drove the AT

I know several people who decided against buying the new Tacoma in real life because of the online reviews and test drive experiences. I actually was out to visit my buddy who family owns a scrap yard yesterday here in Phoenix. I saw he has a brand new TRD sport 4x4. We started chatting about our experience with the Tacoma he actually bought his as a secondary vehicle just for practicality of getting in and out of tight places but still being able to haul some materials (his DD is a Denali XL). I told him mine has been kind of a joke without elaborating as to why ...he immediately smirks and says "why? Because it's slow as fuck huh?" I said well yeah it drives like shit and I've had a ton of problems with it.

So in short you're far from being alone OP.

My 17 automatic is perfect no problems. Only problem I see is the motor not making torque down low, transmission can only make up for so much. Should have come with 4.30 gears and would be about perfect.

Ok, are the AT & MT different gear ratios?

Automatic 3.90 manual 4.30 gears, makes a noticeable difference.

You neglected to mention two important info bits.............

Had the transmission been correctly checked for fluid level, and corrected if it was needed?

Had the transmission TSB reflash been applied?

If yes to both and you still had issues, moving on is probably good for you.

If you had neither done, you may (or may not) have missed out on something that would have corrected the issue for you.

I do have to say it's kinda odd that you'd bother to sign up just to make this your initial post................

Sorry to hear about your issues. So weird.

My 17' has zero tranny issues, complely predictable, smooth and I'm gettin 25-27 mpg when I take it easy.

I'm in love with this thing.

This is what I seek. I can adapt to about anything, what I can't do is never know how it's going to perform from day-to-day based on what ever shift map or fuel map pops up in the stream of madness in the ECU. You are very fortunate!

No problem with my 17 automatic Performs how they designed it to. All power is midrange and up, 4.30 gears would have helped in bottom end. I only leased this one and will try the manual on the next lease.
