I have a '96 4WD 5spd manual transmission tacoma. Lately I have noticed that the shifting hasn't been as solid. At higher RPMs and if I let off the throttle sometimes it will pop out of 3rd or 4th gear. Anybody heard of this issue or know how to resolve? Also I need to know if it is super critical because I don't really have the money to fix right now.

    Thanks

I used an OEM bushing. Some people use a Marlin bushing. I always use OEM when possible to keep things simple.

So I got transmission exposed and rubber boots pulled off. The issue I have run into is the cap that is held down by the pins, I can't get it pushed down to turn it off. It sounds and feels like it is full of grease. Any tips to get it off?

Yeah its difficult to get off. I tried a couple of things...

    1. pushing down with a screw driver, then sticking another screwdriver into the hole and trying to rotate the bracket. Almost worked.
    2. pushing down with a wrench head, then sticking another screwdriver into the hole and trying to rotate the bracket. This worked as your able to get even pressure on both sides of the shift lever so you can rotate it. After you do it once its easy to do it afterwards. Ive have taken my off since then and it takes 30 seconds now.

You only need to rotate it slightly with another screw driver while pushing down for it to come unengaged from the pins.
