Correct way to go about washing after a wax?

I was never into detailing with my old truck, but now I am

I have waxed my truck twice since buying it, but after a wax I use the soap and microfiber

A friend advised me that washing as normal strips the wax

Have tried to search around but can't find answers

I think washing as you normally do would be fine . I don't think it will strip all wax unless maybe you powerwashed it off ! I usually wash clay bar then seal and wax about 3 times a year between regular washing .I mostly use Chemical Guys stuff !

 

Sealing is the key to keeping great paint.

I use Meguiar's Ultimate Wash and Wax then I dry my truck off with Duragloss Aquawax. The DG Aquawax extends the life of the wax.

I use the CG soap too along with the bear claw wash mitt
I heard dawn dish soap is the only one that pulls wax

Calling BS on your friend. Even dawn has proven to be a myth. Besides dawn is tough on the plastic pieces.

Its hard to beat Sonax. Solid product.

 

You need to use a pH balanced soap that will not strip waxes or sealers. Just look for those specifications on the bottle. I use Mr. Pink by Chemical Guys.

Also remember to ALWAYS clay before waxing. Never do anything that requires a buffing motion without claying.

I recommend using a sealer and not a wax. Waxes have to be applied every 4 weekish depending on use and if you have a garage or not. This is a lot of work when you think about claying each time. Sealers last 6-12 months depending on how you care for them.

And Dawn does strip waxes and sealers it just may not strip them off 100% so its best not to use Dawn as a stripping soap. Actually go out and get a soap intended to strip off products. But do not use Dawn as a car wash soap at all if you can avoid it.

 

You need to clay bar 3 times a year? You must park in a highly contaminated area.
My 2012's paint after 6 years is slicker than the day I bought it (minus a few rock chips)
With twice a year waxing with Mequiar's Ultimate Wax and touch up's between with Mequiar's Ultimate Quick Wax.
It's my daily driver but is garage kept at night.

 

Your trucks paint is not slick after 5-6 years.
Its normal to clay 1-2 times a year before sealer applications. Most people seal twice a year.

You really should not be waxing/sealing without claying. Not unless swirls are your favorite paint finish.

 

Probably depends upon where you live. When I was using sealants, I would clay once a year. 2-3 times seems excessive to me.

 

I know a thing or 2 about paint as I painted custom bikes a few years back. Rough tins all the way to the final wet sanding and buffing, minus the airbrush work. So when I say the paint on my truck is slick and free of contaminants
I know what I'm talking about. I won't argue against using a clay bar if it's needed as it is great stuff.

And yes after 5-6 years... the paint looks pretty slick to me. Feels that way to the hand also.

 

You can't look at paint to determine its contaminate free. Hence the whole purpose of clay.

Daily driver also but no garage . Takes a beating in the upstate NY winter . I just like to clean I guess ?My wife busts my balls about bring my little Honda generator to the dock to vacuum the pontoon boat every week !

 

Don't worry about it. You don't clay your truck too often. Goid to do it twice a year when you live in a part of the country with seasons.

Normal washing, with a dedicated automotive soap, will work just fine. There are several on the market, no boutique product is needed.

Do not use dish detergent or laundry soap unless you just have an old beater that you want to get lumps off of. While folks will argue yea or nay regarding wax stripping, they certainly will cause streaking of glass and paint.

It's the efforts of sun, contaminants, clay and/or polishes that removes the old wax. How difficult/long that happens to be is dependent on the quality of the product used.

 

Those swirl marks on that Black paint are not necessarily from not using a clay bar. I can think of several things that could have caused them.
