I see that OCF has a bracket to mount the BSM sensor but it appears to be behind all steel. I don't see how it could possibly work like this. The sensor can't "see" through steel. It has to have a clear line of sight out of the bumper at the same angles as the factory bumper.

Please update once you have installed the OCF bumper. I'd love real-world confirmation that it works with the BSM system. Be as specific as possible, especially pertaining to the changed trigger circumstances. Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know if mounting them behind the taillights would be possible?

They aren't going to fit behind the tail lights.

Its basically going to be impossible to retain BSM function on a High Clearance rear bumper. There just wont be any room inside the bumper to fit the sensors since the High Clearance versions fit so much closer to the body panels.

So I installed the OCF bumper today. Took about 3 hours to get it on. Fit and quality is superb. The BSM and parking sensors installed easily with no errors whatsoever.

Took it out to see how the BSM responded in traffic and stuff. By no means is this exact but on the road it seemed like the BSM trigger point was generally the same with vehicles on either side of me. When vehicles were pproximately 15ft away the indicator light in the mirror would come on.

Backing up out of the drive it seemed to trigger about 4' closer on the sides than before. Probably due to the placement of where the radars now sit. The metal tubing on the bumper though doesn't seem to interfere at all.

I'll drive it around over the next week and see if I have any other impressions but as of right now I'm extremely pleased with its performance.

Thats my biggest concern with these trucks. I really don't think it would take a hit...

sure there is... slight modification on the design of the bumpers to accommodate for the unit. either by adding a bulge of some sort with laser cut for the sensors. then something to attach the BSM unit to the bumper. someone just has to do it...

I was hoping after a month of usage you might give us an update on how BSM is performing with the OCF bumper.
Any ill side effects to report?
Any issues with the sensors being exposed to weather?

TAV LLC in Albuquerque installed my C4 Fab bumper on my 2016 Tacoma with BSM. BSM works fairly good...good enough to alert me to vehicles in my blind spot, cross traffic and rear backup proximity work fine...I like the look and it keeps all the safety tech from my old bumper but all steel and still has a h

has anyone tried to cutting that corner part out themselves on an aftermarket bumper? Only reason why I'm considering it is because the shipping on a bumper like that would be crazy

I think this bumper is a great deal...mantains all the technology that was installed on the OEM bumper...good hitch behind license plate. Great BD rear lights...the BSM sensors are secured in the corners and sealed in...great LED lighting for the plate...this was all $1175 counting shipping...heck the OEM plastic bumper is $1500.

How does the BSM work now that you've had it for some time?

Well before I dropped it off at the dealer last month it had given me an error saying BSM unavailable. My truck this last time has been at the dealer for 3 weeks for a moist transfer leak. Blah blah... wrong seal was delivered, then it was on back order, it arrived they said there was then a shift sensor error, today they told me that it needed a new diff and seal that are both on BO.

I had planned to call OCF on the issue but want to have the truck so I can have them troubleshoot it. They (OCF) was great when it came back from the dealer last time after I had them (dealer) look at the BSM. Dealer said they replaced harnesses, calibrated BSM, thenit took a reset for the BSM and it worked fine for 2 weeks.

During them working on it my parking sensors stated just giving me the red line like I was on something. Dealer couldn't figure it out, they wanted to shim the sensors and/or cut the sensor mount to make it work.

I talked to OCF, sent them some pics and they told me to rotate the sensors 90 degrees one at a time - bamm that worked like a champ. So I plan on talking to them if I ever get my truck back... if I even decide to keep it.

Toyota service and specifically my dealer give me very little confidence in their technical capabilities.

Sorry, I haven't been on the forum for a LONG time. I still run the OCF rear bumper and the last time I took my truck to the dealer for service I had them look at the BSM and Parking sensors since neither were working correctly. They initially gave me the run around about a aftermarket rear bumper not working with the stock sensors and I told them I had the same issue with the stock bumper before swapping it out. They relented and when I got it back everything worked for about 2 weeks and now nothing works once again. I tried emailing OCF and never got a response back. I wish they sent sensor wiring extenders since the outside parking sensor wiring is a little tight (or drilled wiring access holes through the brackets). I will have to try the rotating of the parking sensors and see how that works.

After I rotated mine the parking sensors worked. I've talked off and on with Candice about the BSM - still not working.

The problem is that its not that simple. There are reasons we don't offer BSM functionality in the HC rear bumper, that's why we offer a separate rear bumper option that is specifically designed to work with BSM.
Adding BSM to a HC rear bumper would defeat the purpose of an HC bumper because it would no longer be HC. The sensors have to be mounted at the same height, angle and location as they are in the original bumper in order for them to work correctly. Well the sensors are located down in the bottom corner of each side of the factory bumper. So if you design a HC bumper with a "bulge" where the sensor needs to fit, then the bumper is no longer High Clearance, defeating the purpose of the bumper and what it is intended for.

Maybe the 2019 will have the sensors implemented in the taillights like the new jeep wrangler

Yep, you're correct - it can't see through the gap adequately. It's masked at the top and bottom by the steel so the ECU shuts it down because of the interference. What a PITA - I'm requesting a return / refund or something from OCF, I'm tired of playing tag with them on this.
