So anyone ever have there oil fill spout fall of their engine before?

I have a dual battery system
So it is close to the battery system but it looks like the adhesive let go you can see the residue on the exterior of the engine.

It was attached two days ago when I filled up the engine windshield washer fluid.

I have on a 2nd gen. The whole spout there is screwed on. Surprised it is glued on with the 3rds. Maybe it is a Toyota "feature" for both gens.

I have unscrewed it a few times when trying to get the cap off, and also found it sitting on the skid plate one time.

I think that's way too close to the battery. When you apply torque to the engine it will twist and hit edge of your battery. Probably the reason why it broke off.

Good very well be. That is the dual battery setups in the 3rd gens though. I can't do anything about the clearance.

It also had about 15mm of clearance. I've requested when they install the new adhesive they rotate the pipe up to provide adequate clearance. Something for everytone whom has dual batteries to be aware of though.

Even still these engines do not have that much torque to them.

Regardless, this is something for anyone with the dual battery setups to be careful with. I am also off-roading pretty much everyday in the truck on my job site (bumpy, going over 2 foot drops, etc) to get around to inspect new areas ahead of my team and plan it out before we open up new ground.

Anyways, it obviously came in contact with the battery, there was a mark on the side of the optima, it is just whether it was before the adhesive let go (it didn't appear to be ripped), more like it just fell off., usually force on something adhesive or gasket they tend to tear or at least in my experience with heavy equipment. This just looks like it let go. My thoughts are it started to let go and dipped down and got caught by the battery which ripped it the rest of the way off. Who knows, I already know Toyotas response will be yup, your fault you modded the truck.

Nothing an oil change and filter won't take care of and again at the end of the week just to make sure there is no dust/sand in the engine. Hopefully they do what I ask and reinstall it and rotate the pipe back. IT brings the cap of the spout in closer to the engine and provides more clearance.

Regardless it is a bad design, they should be screwed in or clamped in with a retainer like you do hydraulic lines on equipment. The truck is being kitted out for a trip to South America and exploring the back country around Canada and something like this happening has me really second guessing my choice of vehicles, not bad mouthing the tacoma, but in 70,000kms, this truck is not wearing like I would expect toyota's to. My tundra and previous tacoma were rock solid, this tacoma not so much. .

Engines shouldnt move much, if at all side to side under load. It should be forward/aft.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
All that low end torque reaped havoc on the filler neck.

oh yeah, that low end torque did it in ;) If I remember correctly to get some torque out of this engine she needs to be rev'd up pretty high.

Honestly I haven't even look under the hood of 2017 Tacoma yet. I guess there's a motor in there.

Yeah Toyota leased the design from the Singer sewing machine company.

Oil and filter changed as well. They did a good job repairing it. They know my plans and where the trucks going and have been very accommodating.

Still can't believe it's glued on neither can the dealer. .

I just had this same issue happen to me. I also have the dual battery setup and mine broke off in the same way yours did. It is simply held on by adhesive? I noticed the residue on mine as well but I thought mine cracked off or something

Yup it is just plan ol epoxy holding it on,, , they fixed it right up and did what I asked, which was rotate it so the fill spout was tighter per to the engine. I've got loads of clearance now.

My dealer said they could replace the entire valve cover and ask that I'd lose the dual battery setup or I could just use a strong adhesive. They didn't trust the adhesive they had in the shop so my service advisor recommend JB Weld plastic bonder. I removed the old residue from both parts, cleaned it with some degreaser and roughed it up with some sand paper. I put plenty of new epoxy and installed it at a better angle to allow for more clearance. It's looking really good so I am confident it won't happen again. I am glad I found this thread and hopefully it's helpful to others. Thanks again @aaen
