I recently purchased a 2017 Tacoma trd offroad 4x2 double cab. The problem I am having is in the transmission not shifting properly resulting in poor fuel mileage. It has been checked at two dealerships with no improvement. Anyone having the same issue?

Imma get in here before somebody flames about the s***y search. We really do have a ton of threads about this. There are a ton of complaints about the 3rd gen powertrain performance. I'm currently driving a Rav4 while my Taco is in the shop for a recall and I must say its like night and day between my truck. Its amazing how much a difference proper shift points make on an automatic tranny.

Bottomline: Until someone comes out with a real tune, or the Toyota offers up a fix we are up a creek. Some guys have recommend Shift Sense and other products, but IMO you're better off saving your money for the time being and going light on the throttle. Depending on the mileage you've put on it so far there's a good chance you haven't fully broken it in yet. Personally, swapping the stock air filter to a K&N and removing the air restricter resulted in much better highway fuel economy. I went from 20 flat to 24 on the way back from last road trip.

Slight correction, unless there is some late breaking news....which I have not heard of...there is only 1 Revision to the Transmission/Software update. There was an original software update and then a revision to that initial release.

There have been rumors of a 2nd revision (overall a 3rd release) but none of those rumors, to my knowledge, have come to fruition.

The reason there is a lot of scuttlebutt about having a 3rd release (2nd revision) is because for MANY of us who have had the Trans Updates, we have found them to make a temporary improvement until the transmission settles in and the Learning mode adapts, then it goes back to SHIT performance. So there is HOPE that Toyota will continue to try and update to improve this system. So far two attempts and only very limited to no success.

Well I've seen people saying revision 2. There simply are not two revisions is all I'm getting at. Words matter ;)

I finally got them to check the trans fluid, said it was a quarter to a half quart low. Hasn't changed anything. The funny thing is, it shifts great when it's cold and I wonder if a thicker atf would help. Seems you get use to it after a while.

Is it possible to reset the transmission's "learned" parameters?

On my '98 SL500 there is a process to reset the transmission's "learned" crap. key on engine off, accelerator to the floor for 5 seconds, hold accelerator to floor turn ignition off (do not remove key), release pedal (leave key in), wait 2 minutes, start engine--I do this each 500 to 700 miles or so. It's kind of a PITA but it does wake-up the tranny...

Several people have asked the same question. It's not apparent to me or at least there's no easy way to validate whether or not simply disconnecting the battery will do it or if you have to hook it to a program like techstream to actually flash the ecu.

This is one of the things that annoys me about newer cars. The FSM for my Mustangs and the Mercedes go into great detail as to how each system works (mechanically, electrically, and logically for digital systems). Inputs, expected values and interactions are provided--and what specifically happens if it fails. They also include info as to what specifically is reset when the battery is disconnected and what they are reset to, and information like the tranny reset procedure for the SL500.

The newer service manuals are nothing but diagnostic ladder diagrams and what parts you can replace and hope you get lucky--there is no meat as to exactly how does this thing work. I have the 2nd gen FSM and find it to be severely lacking in these areas; the FSM for my wife's '03 Highlander is better...
