Has anyone with the howling rear end gone into the rear?

@scornwel did you ever take your truck into a diff shop to have it looked at?

I had my MT in this weekend, they verified it by test drive. Just wanted it on the paperwork in case there is a fix. Ofcourse they said they needed to verify that it wasn't 'normal' by driving other MT's prior to anything, but they didn't have any at the dealer.

According to Toyota "2016 Product information", the 4 cylinder MT and the V6 AT have a 3.909 differential ratio.
The 4 cylinder AT and the V6 MT have the 4.30 differential ratio.
Which one of these is the new differential? Or can you have either ratio in the 8.7 inch differential, or either ratio in the 8 inch differential? If not, which ratio is the 8.7 inch differential?

I have the 2.7 liter manual transmission and no howl. So I have the 3.909 ratio.

Initially mine quieted down a tad when I installed my 1.5" rear lift with 3-leaf AAL. Now it is getting louder.

I really think it's a lash issue in the rear, but I haven't been in the rear yet.

Is that a loaner or did you trade the Tacoma in?

Trade. They gave me 1k less than what I paid for the taco.

They're clearing out the Tundras. It is so much better in every way, except mpg. I get 17.

I'll take that all day long.

Every time I drive it I ask myself what the hell was I thinking.

I hated the drivetrain in that Tacoma with a passion.

I love my Taco for sure just like many others on here, but not blindly so. I have owned too many new vehicles over the years to believe that the howling is OK. I will say my tranny now at 5K miles is livable and no worse than my 16 Yukon XL but that howling in the rear end has me beyond edgy every time I drive it. I will likely either LL mine or just pay to have a private shop fix it. I'm not sure which option I'll pick at this point but I'm leaning towards fixing it.

As for the comparison between a midsize, any midsize, and fullsize trucks - there is not one. Fullsize trucks are light years ahead of our midsize trucks in every way possible except for what many of us like the most - off road abilities and manageable size. Other than that the fullsize truck market is innovating like no other market and the midsize market is till modifying 20 year old platforms. Best of luck with that Tundra - nice truck with awesome throttle response.

Yup. This follows mine howl path for the most part.

I think there is wear occurring which is why it's widening and doing it on acceleration now too.

Yep my wife's 2016 4runner is great. Not a single issue. Performs and drives great not like my POS truck.

Agreed. My plan is to buy a 2nd or 3rd gen 4Runner and tow or drive it for fun.

Smitty, you got more guts and patience than I do. I had a platinum warranty just like you and in the end I simply could not stand another day.

    You're a stand up guy!
