    Hello TW,

I have had this strange rattling noise when I accelerate. It sounds like lifters but it doesn't rattle at idle. It usually begins around 35-40 miles/hr during acceleration and stops at about 55-60. I can drive at any of these speeds without the noise. It's just the acceleration. It doesn't happen in park, only when driving. Could something be flapping around in the exhaust? I don't have a clue what it could be. I know this is not a lot to go on. If you need more info, please ask.

could be one of the exhaust shields. my front CAT shield lost all the factory bolts due to rust but since the shield is aluminum I put in new bolts. no more rattle.

Yes, check the various heat shields on the exhaust system. Start at the exhaust manifold, and work your way back, just shaking the sheet metal shields and you will more then likely find a loose one that can be simply re-welded back in place. Obviously, it's not "Pinging", right?
By the way...welcome to TW! ;)

Thanks! I'll definitely take a look. It doesn't bother me but my wife thinks it's going to break down. Not my truck. That sucker is running strong!

Then for your pride to remain intact we gotta figure this out :) Check your carrier bearing and your u joints in your drive shaft as well.

    dents. lots of dents.
Might be the O2 sensor cover behind the catalytic converter, you will see it from under the passenger's side. Just got my fixed today.

The two nuts just rusted away leaving two rusty bolts and the metal cover dancing on top whenever you accelerate. The metal cover would dance around and you would hear the noise.

I have reason to believe it has something to do with oil. I have a slight leak and my oil was very low that day. I topped it off and the noise went away for a while. I used really cheap oil that day and I believe the integrity of the oil has diminished so much the clatter is back. It sounds like the valves IMO. The oil level is still in good operating range. My intention is to drain the oil, replace the filter and top it off with good oil. Hope that takes care of it. It really affects the performance of the truck. On the freeway, I hear the clatter when I accelerate. So trying to get to 70 or 75 is a bit of a challenge when I am trying to prevent making the engine clatter.

could just be the old oil. My old 98 started getting loud lifters when I needed an oil change. Changed the oil and it was back to normal.
