I will use this thread to help plan a trip from Macon, GA to Moab, Utah in the summer/fall of 2018. Anyone is welcome to join and/or help plan the trip.

This has now become Project Pick up GFC and Explore Moab. We will be going to Montana to install the GFC, then make our way to see Moab and the grand canyon before heading back home. Tentatively as follows:

THU NOV 15TH: Leave after work (middle Georgia), hoping to get somewhere in TN and sleep.
FRI NOV 16TH: Drive a long ways, shooting for an 800 mile day.
SAT NOV 17TH: Shooting for another 800 mile day.
SUN NOV 18TH: Arrive at GFC to install at some point, make our way to Moab, Utah.
    MON NOV 19TH: Explore Moab
    TUE NOV 20TH: Explore Moab
    WED NOV 21ST: Explore Moab
    THU NOV 22ND:Explore Moab
FRI NOV 23RD: Explore Moab or go to Grand Canyon
SAT NOV 24TH: Moab or Grand Canyon, head home
    SUN NOV 25TH: Driving home
MON NOV 26TH: Arrive home at some point

Anything post day 3 is subject to change if we decide we want to stay in one location longer because we want to see more. The primary portion is getting to GFC headquarters quickly as possible so the rest of the trip can be spent enjoying the outdoors.

So far we have 1 rig:

I've made the trip a bunch from Chattanooga. If you only have a week, don't waste your time between here and there. Team drive and get to the mountains ASAP. Then you can take a little time and enjoy the scenery.

You will be right at Arches, and that is a must see. ... but buy a day pass, then go back after dark. No crowds and amazing night views.

You will have a great time. I love the high desert. We are taking the Tacoma next year also. Not sure the dates yet tho.

Just did this a couple weeks ago. The I 70 route sucks. Little to no services. Very boring except Denver to Moab.

Arches is currently under road construction- all must be out no later than 6:30pm. Might be fine next year though.

I recommend Fall, its very hot during summer, we go every year for our annual Mountain bike ride and its still very warm at end of September.

Anyone in the Georgia/southeast/all of tacomaworld interested in making this trek next year? I have people bailing and going alone wouldnt be as fun. If anyone is interested let me know, still planning it out but I did get the routes from Peach State overland group that did this in 2016 and will most likely follow that.

nissan 4 wheelers.com usually does a week overlanding trip In Arizona
I was going to do that then a week in Moab but it looks like they might not do it this year.

I-40 or I-70 doesn't matter there is nothing to look at except windmills until you get to the Rockies

We went to Moab last Year around the first of sept and it was HOT on the rocks
We drove straight 19 hours to Colorado Springs then straight to the summit of Pikes Peak. Don't do that without oxygen people from sea level are not ment to be at 14,500 feet but the views are beautiful.

also if you have never been to the Grand Canyon It's only a few hours from Moab. But after being in Moab a week it's nothing special

Here is our route through the Rockies I would highly recommend It

A group from Alabama went this past May and the weather was great. We are planning another trip next May. Let me know your plans and I may go back out with your group too.

Thanks man, I will definitely look into this route as the planning commences.

DOes this group allow outsiders? LOL I wouldnt mind tagging along and May could work for us. We wanted to plan it around a holiday (IE. Memorial day) to maximize our vacation time.

I am hoping to join you all on this trip out to Utah. Would be awesome and that's what I'm actively building my ACLB to handle. I hope to have my High Clearance rear on by then.

We were looking at mid-late april timeframe. It is looking like 2 rigs right now but my work is changing us from 3 shift operation to 4 shift so I have to see how my off days fall before I can be concrete. I am also looking into the GFC camper so i might try to push it back so I have the camper for the trip. I will update when I know more.

If we do not go in April then it will most likely be the September/October time frame.

April is really good. You have to be concerned a little with snow in the Rockies, but the weather in Moab is perfect that time of year.
