Lift my 4 cylinder tacoma?

I have both 4cylinder and 6cylinder 01 and 02 tacos. The 6cylinder came with super charger factory installed and factory tires. the 4cylinder was re-gear to 5.29 and run on 33x12.50x15 Toyo tires M/T. when drive around local street they seem to consume the same amount of gas but once out to off road my 4cylinder is consumes less gas than the v6. these are just my trucks yours' could be different stories who knows.

Not true. At 2.5K i got a 3" lift with no change in MPGs. I have a 280 to 350 mile/week commute and run two sets of tires. I use the stock Dungflops (30.47") for commuting and put on the 255/85/16 BFG KM2s (33.3") for off roading. I left the BFGs on for a week and only got 1MPG less than when I run the Dungflops and that included 60 miles of off roading. I get around 20 MPG on winter gas and 24 MPG on summer gas on my drive to & from work doing 35 MPH 5%, 70 MPH 5% & 75 MPH 90% of the trip. Elevation goes from 4450 to 4100 with a lot of up & down in between.

 

Coming from a ninja that runs a Four banger (me) first off if you plan on getting one be prepared to get right off the bat: Exaust, headers, air intake... thats if you want lift on 31s... Ive had 32 BFG ko's and she didnt struggle to push them she just lagged in power... now that I switched to 31s thats changed. I recently took my spacer lift off and am waiting to throw some billys and OMEs i got in the garage on so on my setup im running arround 270 to a tank.... I just did all the oils/ fluids in the truck and this tank I plan on getting close to 300 or above...... GUESS WHAT??? THATS 48 DOLLARS A TANK its got close to 200k and she runs at 2100k rpms at 75+ mph with my K@n intake, pace headers, and exaust...... so a 4 banger is awesome to have but the 6 is nice to have too

 

Is that all? With stock exaust, headers, air intake 3" lift 31" stock tires I can easily get 400/tank on winter gas (need gas light comes on around 350-360). When I put the 33" BFG KM2s on I only lose 1MPG.

 

O yea... from a 98 four banger??? of course we dont got none of that fancy truck tech no logy... and thats only 16galons of fuel i think

But still 300 miles on 16 gallons is only 18.75 MPG. I get 18.5 to 19.5 on winter gas & 23.5 to 24.5 summer gas. The only thing that's going to stop me from geting 450 to 480 miles on a tank this summer is that they charge $.10 to $.15 more a gallon in the Reno/Sparks area than they do in Ferntucky where I work.

 

I've got a 4banger double cab pre-runnner. lifted 3 inches on 33s and she does just fine. but I don't take it off roading at all. and I dont do much towing either but in the end if I could change it to a v6 I would. its just gonna run a lot smoother.

 

get the 6, i wish i did.

 

Everyone saying you can't lift a 4cyl and out big tires on it and still get decent milage....



Your arguments are invalid.... as pictured I get 20 mpg.

Do they even make a 4wd 2.7 dblcb? If so you'd end up regearing pretty quick but good news is it you'd still get better milage than a 4.0 if it's a pre runner your after then I'm sorry

 

I've had the V6 and the 4 banger. Both second gen. Did not lift either.
I had a TRD OR AC manual 2005, and I currently have the Base AC 4x4 2.7 Manual 2008. They both perform about the same for the level of off roading that I regularly do. My 2.7 does everything my V6 did besides tow a boat. My 2.7 gets about 22 MPG, and my V6 got about 13-16 MPG. I'm not exaggerating either, when I got the 2.7 I was very surprised how much better MPG I am getting. I also have pretty decent tires on my 2.7 as seen on my profile picture.

Both my Trucks were access cab. I personally have no interest in the double cab for my needs. But if you want to get a double cab, and run a huge lift with fat tires, you will get more power out of the V6. The only points my V6 really had an advantage was Towing, and going up steep freeways at high speeds. Off road, I really notice no difference... Yes the Off road package V6 was AWESOME, but I really didn't need all that stuff for the type of off roading I do. I think if you pick your lines, and drive smart the 2.7 will serve you fine granted you get 4x4. I will never buy a 4x2 truck ( I had a 4x2 Ranger that was just basically dangerous ).

Tons of guys here do off road trails with their 2.7s that I would never even consider driving on with my TRD off road.

That is odd, I personally calculate my MPG by hand every time I get gas. I get 18.5-22 MPG regularly, depending on how much off roading or style of driving I am doing. Usually I just drive back and forth to work on the freeway and get a solid 22MPG. When I off road all day, my average MPG is around 18.5 - 19MPG. I wonder what factors are causing some here to get poor millage with their 2.7s.. My 2.7 gets WAY better MPG than my V6 did. My V6 got around 13-16MPG. My TRD OR AC MT was a complete gas hog. I also off road with my 2.7 about once a month.. And by off road, I usually go on ATV trails to get to my hunting/shooting/fishing spots in the desert/mountains, places that full size trucks could never go. I went from having the TRD Off Road to having a base model, so I ''downgraded'' considerably and do not regret my purchase at all. I also saved about 15 thousand dollars by getting a used 2.7 compared to a new or slightly used V6.

I don't regret my purchase at all.. It's also nice not having to worry about getting scratches on my truck when I go off road. I only tow stuff maybe once or twice a year so I have no gripes about the 2.7. In the end it saved me a ton of money. Great investment that will last many years.

Either way, I have nothing but great things to say about Tacomas. My only suggestion is that OP get a manual transmission. Both of my Tacos were Manual, and they perform awesome.. Be warned, the V6 will peel out very easily at stop lights . I used to drift that truck like there was no tomorrow, caught air a few times in both trucks as well. My TRD OR lasted 300 thousand miles with pretty much just oil changes, and would have kept on chugging if it didn't get totalled in a car accident on the freeway!

 

Lift is fine, it's bigger, heavier tires that kills the 4 cylinder.
