2005 DCSB SR5 with 5100's and stock coils set at. 85 or new 2017 off road complete shocks and coils. Both will give around 1 inch lift, but what would ride better?

5100's .... the stock TRD OR shock between the 2nd n 3rd gen is the same... and the 5100's are an upgrade from them.

What you could do is get 5100's and run the 3rd gen coils with the 5100's at the 0 setting, that would be IMO the best combination of all those parts.

Makes sense, but are the 2nd gen 5100's the same as the 3rd gen 5100's? I thought that they were different cause the coils are different... Aside from transferring the 2017 coils to the 5100's whats better between the two options above.

3rd gen 5100's have different clip settings at stock they are 1in higher due to the different coils, they also likely have different valving to deal with the slightly different springs.

Doing this would you still get the 1 inch lift?

correct. the stock shock dimensions between the 2nd and 3rd gen's are nearly identical as far as spring seat placement / length etc. The thing that gets the 3rd gens the extra inch from the factory is the different coil.

Looking at the 5100 specs for the 2nd gen and 3rd gen, the 2nd gen shocks actually have more travel. 2nd gen 5100 (24-239370) is 17.02 in collapsed and 22.56 extended (5.54in of travel), 3rd gen 5100 (24-263108) is 17.58 in collapsed and 22.22 extended (4.64in travel). That stated from my findings cycling suspension without a coil, the 2nd gen 5100 still has ~ 1.25in of travel left when at full bump, so the longer collapsed length of the 3rd gen 5100 is not an issue, so you really only loose out on .32 in of droop at the shock so right around .6 in of droop at the wheel.

I have been meaning to do some playing around without a coil in the truck at some point with a half inch top plate spacer to see if i can utilize the unused travel of my 2nd gen 5100's without drooping too much to bind anywhere. Maybe a combination of a shorter bumpstop and a lil spacer. I THINK 4th gen 4 runner limited front bumpstops are a bit shorter, i gotta measure my moms runner.

So with that said, will the 2nd gen 5100 work with the 3rd gen coil @zero on a 2nd gen taco without any adverse effects? Im going to be putting on the full 2017 assemblies soon, but i do have 5100's laying around also to maybe try in the future.

yup no problems. would be just like using an OME 885/886/887 coil to get lift with a 5100 @ 0. Id say if you have the parts just put the 3rd gen coil with the 5100 the first time and call it good.

I have the 5100s at the .85 lift. I hardly noticed a change... rides nice.

Yep, i had the 5100's with my stock coils at .85 and the ride was good. Now im up at 1.75 with eibachs and the 5100's at zero. I want it a little lower (i know im weird...) so i just think im gonna throw the whole 2017 strut in there and she how she feels and while im at it, im gonna take the stock overload out of my icon 3 leaf and lower the rear a little too. If its not right, then ill take everything apart and put the 17 coils with my 2nd gen 5100's at zero. I have access to a garage, so its not a problem to change stuff in and out.
