hey all! so my friend and i thinking of making my 2003 Tacoma Prerunner TRD Off Road 3.4L v6 (rwd) into a 4x4 beast. i was wondering if anyone can give me a cost estimate of how much that would cost me. i know the transmission would be my biggest expense but I'd like to know the whole projects price range. thank you!

You have a 2003 which uses drive-by-wire which is an electronic throttle, those A340F transmissions are significantly more expensive than the 1995-2002 fly-by-wire transmissions since they only came on 1st gen Tacoma for 2 years. I'm in the process of collecting all my conversion parts, and I only need at this point the driveshafts and some misc. hardware. At this point I'm about $1,300 in.

I didn't pay a lot because I looked around. I paid $250 for my transmission in a different state while junkyards here in Cali wanted an average of $600 for theirs. Here is a drive-by-wire transmission used only in the 2003/2004 trucks for $1,200 which is outrageous.

Usually people who have 2003/2004 trucks swap the output shafts since it's cheaper. The A340F and A340E are identical besides the extended shaft length to acommodate the transfer case.

That being said, I don't know if all 2003/2004 trucks had drive-by-wire. You will have to confirm, but I'm not sure how exactly to do that.

    So a very rough estimate:

1995-2002: $1,500-$2,000 (even cheaper if you pull the parts yourself)
2003-2004: $2,500-$3,000+ accounting for the price of the drive-by-wire transmission
