Was looking at it more from a functional standpoint.

My mistake; I just looked up the numbers and the supersonic ammo is roughly on par with 5.56 around 1300ft/lbs of energy when they're fired out of a 16 inch barrel.

So the SBR performance is where it shines. And suppressed.

Another functional area where .300 is advantageous is some states (Virginia for example) do not allow .223 sized rounds for deer hunting. .300 BLK part commonality with .223 allow just a barrel change to have an AR that is allowed for deer hunting.

Although I use a .308 AR as my deer rifle, .308 is a little overkill for the typical deer east of the Mississippi, I think. Obviously modern bullet construction for .223 allows for a good deer round, but until VA and other states update their laws, deer hunters will need a larger caliber to be legal.

I certainly wouldn't hunt deer with a .223; not sure why anybody would want to take that kind of risk.
My 30-06 or .35 Remington are my go-to guns for deer, usually. Occasionally 12ga with 3" 00 Buck, if I'm hunting a restricted area.
But, they grow larger up here in Maine than in the states further south. I wouldn't feel comfortable going out with anything less than a .270 for deer, personally, but I know a couple of people who hunt with a .243, so... :notsure:

Not sure how long the shots you're taking on deer are, but .223 could handle everything - distance wise and deer size wise - I've ever taken a shot at. Federal Fusion MSR .223 is very effective on deer and other medium sized game.

Longest I've shot at is probably 300 yards. Not a lot of opportunities for distance shots around here; most of where I hunt is wooded. Average is probably 50-150 yards, if I were to guess off of the top of my head

If they work for you, great. I just prefer to stick with something a little larger, is all. :notsure:

I bought my 300 blk to meet Wa st hunting requirement for .24 or larger to take big game. I had other options available, but they were way overkill for the western side of the state. I wanted something smaller lighter, but an AR for hunting in the brush. I retired my venerable Mod 94 to field the M&P 300 Whisper.

The 300blk SS ammo is just a slight bit behind the 7.62x39 AK round for power. Not enough of a difference that anyone or thing shot with it would be able to tell the difference between the two. o_O

Agreed. I've shot plenty of hogs with my .223 AR but by no means do I consider it a great deer round. But if you sink a 55gr Barnes TSX in their ear hole they will go down.

I guess that .243 only works for women and children...
Probably don't want to hear about the 20+ deer a certain 22 hornet I know has killed with one shot each.

Thankfully we all get to pick what we hunt with, and when I was younger I liked the bigger rounds. Experience has taught me it's more in bullet placement than it is in bullet size. I mostly use a .250-3000 for deer and a 7mm-08 or .280AI for anything bigger. Not crazy about the .243, but if it was all I had I wouldn't feel bad about using it on anything smaller than brown bear.

Never said that, just that it didn't suit me personally. But if you want to get butthurt about my opting not to use a caliber that small for deer, feel free. Frankly I don't care in the least about how many of whatever large game you've shot with whatever small cartridge, just like you shouldn't give two craps about what I use. As stated before, if what you're using works for you, then great. Keep doing it. As for shot placement, pretty much everybody who's ever gone hunting knows that placement trumps caliber. And I've been hunting for around 25 years, so I'm not shy on experience.
I bought a 30-06 for my hunting rifle because I wanted something that would drop anything in Maine or Canada reliably, from coyote to Moose. At the time my gun budget was limited, so I needed a gun that would do it all. As an all-around cartridge, 30-06 is overkill for smaller game like Coyote but will work reliably on Moose or bear. Maybe a .243 would too, but I preferred to err on the side of caution and went with a larger caliber. If you feel like I think that choosing to hunt with a smaller caliber makes you a woman or a child, I guess that's your problem.

If you think I'm butthurt over anything you said, you've misread my post. I just don't get into the one cartridge works great and the other doesn't debates. Use whatever you like. Thankfully we have lots of choices. Shot placement trumps cartridge selection. Unfortunately many people don't get that concept and tend to shoot bigger guns than they can handle and just end up wounding more animals.

Here's hoping you have a great hunting season what ever you are shooting.

    Then I apologize.

I've had too many people get worked up about my cartridge preference lately, so I took your comments about shot placement and experience as a slight on my marksmanship and hunting experience.

Personally, I agree with you; shoot what works for you and what you like. My accuracy hasn't suffered any apparent degredation from the recoil of the '06, and I'm not a big guy. So I'm always surprised by people that say it kicks too hard and that you can't hit accurately with one.

Any of you guys buy a lot of ammo online? I stocked up on $500 or so a few months back. Mainly shotgun shells, its hard to find much in bulk around here.

I used a website called ammoseek.com, it searchs a database of 100 something online sites that sell ammo, and has the cheapest price for the caliber and brand you're looking for. You can search by amount too. It also has a shipping cost gauge, to tell you which places charge a bunch to ship.

I've used a few I've found from there. Ammoliquidator.com has a great selection, but sometimes the shipping takes a bit. My favorite, and go to site that a lot of people have recommended before I tried, is SGAmmo.com. I've used them several times now, trackings easily done in it arrives quickly.
