I'll never let anyone change my oil besides myself from here on out.

Curious, do you guys suggest any specific tool to change the oil filter? How do you guys go about changing the filter? I just crawl under my truck and its a royal PITA. I would prefer to use a cheap affordable tool.
Do you all just crawl under your Trucks, or do you lift it up somehow to give yourself some work space?

Forgive my Noobness, I just want to take good care of the truck, and this is the first vehicle I have owned that I started doing my own oil changes on. Like I stated earlier, I'm not very vehicle savvy.
The only work I want dealerships doing on my Truck is the factory stuff so they have a record of it in case they mess something up.

My 2008 Tacoma is a V6 (4.0 engine) and the oil filter is very easy to change out and install quickly, without all the mess. Reason being it's location in right on top, in front of the engine within short reach.

But my daughters 2012 Tacoma is 4 cylinder (2.7 engine) and yes the oil filter is stuck up under the engine (why Toyota designed it this way is ?)

When changing the oil on her Tacoma, just crawl under and after I remove the oil pan drain plug (to drain the old oil) then I first loosen up the oil filter slightly (use two extensions one long & one mid size and of course the proper size oil filter tool) so that I can remove it with my hand. Use a plastic store bag and with my hand covered (using the plastic bag) I slowly unscrew and remove the oil filter. If oil drips or leaks out (and it will) at least the plastic bag will catch most of it. Slowly bring the oil filter down (don't invert it cause you'll have oil every where) then dispose of it.

Once all the oil is out of the oil pan and your ready to re-install the oil drain plug, take the new oil filter with you and once your under your truck install both. Don't over tighten the oil drain plug or the oil filter, just snug enough.

Here's a quick tip, before you start changing the oil, flatten down a card board box to put underneath the engine when changing the oil. Do this so to protect your driveway's concrete.

    Thank you!
Yes I currently have the 2.7 its a 2008 4x4 AC MT, and yes the filter is not in the easiest to reach spot!

A certified Toyota Mechanic didn't change your oil. It was a pimple faced minimum wage shop boy that changed the oil.

I used to think that taking my truck to the dealer for service was the best way to get the best "Toyota experience" care for my truck, I don't believe that to be true at all anymore. Especially when it comes to oil changes. Dealerships give oil change services to the most inexperienced techs to save their more experienced ones for the big jobs. And they expect oil changes to be done FAST. That's a recipe for disaster, shit like loose drain plugs and forgetting to put new oil in the motor become a reality that way. If you can't do it yourself, do some research on shops in your area and find the best one to do the job. Dealers are for warranty work, that's about it IMO

One more reason too do your own oil change.I mean damn 10 minutes worth of easy work. You will wait at the dealership for 2 plus hours for the same thing,no thanks.
