Besides one is for CA trucks, is there any performance differences between the two types?

Nope. Well, not on other vehicles I'm familiar with. So I doubt Toyota aftermarket stuff either.

CARB on aftermarket parts that are common in the rest of the country just means someone felt it was worth the big bucks in potential sales to go through the Cali paperwork process.

California cats are just that, normal cats with California paperwork approved by bureaucracy. I always say, California bureaucracy is worst than Poland's in 70s.

I had aftermarket cat installed (f*** meth-heads stole my OEM and f*** Liberty Mutual refused to pay up) , and it passed smog test for 3 years. On 4th year it did not pass because SMOG guys "did not have that model in computer". Apparently when Cali got computerized some IT data keying monkey did not enter it to database and even this cat was valid on printed catalogs and had valid Cali certifications printed, it was still not good because was "not in the system". Muffler shop owner who put it originally stand behind his work and replaced it for the one "in the system" free of charge (that I call good customer service). I still can't get over the stupidity of California bureaucracy.

The bs in California is why I moved to Nevada a few years ago. The price for a smog is about 1/3 what I used to pay when I lived there.

We need our vehicles smogged here only because the county we live in requires it. All they do is hook their machine up to the odb port under the dash and that's it.

I think I'll with non carb cats when I replace them.

I don't think you know what that word means. Everybody in California that makes laws is elected. Same with this country. I'm not picking sides or saying you're wrong with your opinions, I'm just saying your use of that word is wrong.

There is a historical meaning (that I think you refer to) "Historically, a bureaucracy was a government administration managed by departments staffed with non-elected officials."

What I mean is common meaning "Today, bureaucracy is the administrative system governing any large institution" which simple means the the administration's task is not to serve people but to create rules and force everybody to follow them. The job and goal of elected officials is not to serve people but to show off by being efficient in making rules (prospect of getting job in lobbying companies $$$). Every 2 years a big list of stupid propositions shows that. It makes California heavy over regulated state, expensive and difficult to live in.

Sorry, this is not the Cat subject, it is just one of many reasons why having a car in California is more expensive and difficult than some other states.
