Tried the zip-tie fix, worked reasonably well for a while. Seeking perfection, went with the TSB (attached) procedure and updated part number. Can confirm that this also applies to 2013 Tacomas.

    Parts required:
Qty. 1 45220-04020 Shaft Assy, Steering Intermediate
    Qty. 2 90080-11555 Bolt, w/Washer

    Pretty easy with two people.
    Here is the old one:

No. Bought the part and did it myself, with help from a friend.

My truck is way out of warranty, so I didn't even ask the dealer. Contact @gunny1005 for a price on the parts.

Being a TBS I thought it's taken care of out side and regardless of warranty status... but thanks

So I'm assuming this worked, how is this any different then the current parts that came with truck?

Did they improve said issue somehow with new item?

Zip ties are not working anymore and willing to pay this price and install myself.

    Cheers

Worked well for me. Haven't had it off road since the fix, but the steering feel is like new over our broken roads around here. As far as the differences go, the inner collar (where people have been shoving zip ties) looks to be a different material and the black rubber donut feels a bit stiffer. Funny that the current parts list for our trucks still lists the old part number. This guy was right, stole the idea from him:

Thanks for the info, now something else to add to the list.

Driving me crazy every time I drive over 17, even my wife noticed it right out the gate and she only drives my truck like 3 times a year.

You have a 2012? The TSB applies directly.

But you also have to worry about your air injection pump/valve putting your truck into limp mode...:D

I am not sure exactly what they did to correct the issue. but in the letter it says:

Some 2005 – 2012 model year 4WD Tacoma and 2WD Tacoma PreRunner vehicles may exhibit steering rattle noise when driven over rough road surfaces. A newly designed steering intermediate shaft has been made available to address this condition.

Here is the thing that so irks me. If you decide to replace the intermediate shaft and go to your friendly dealer to get (order) one the parts manuals still default to the same old POS shaft and not the TSB one despite the fact that the original TSB was issued seven (7) years ago... and they both are the same price! Make sure you get the shaft with end number xxxxx-xxx20. You may also have to educate the parts people as to its existence.

Not at all. The '14s and '15s were the final iteration of the engine so they are identical and I had no issue whatsoever putting it in my '14.

The reference I made to the air pump was my weak attempt at humor, specific to the 2012 trucks.

A lot of times Toyota will make a new part number for the TSB so they can track how many they are going under that TSB. The normal part number will supersede to a new part number in which its the same part but two different numbers. they don't need or want to track that number because its not a warrantied part..
