I loved my Xterra, it was a beast off road, with better stock suspension and more nimble than either of my Taco's to be honest :anonymous:

I will always be a Tacoma fanboy, but man I would like to setup an offroad Xterra again.
In a perfect world, I would like a TRD OR AC MT, and a Xterra MT Pro4x :anonymous:

I also want to add I towed some fat loads with the Xterra with ease :anonymous:

Never had an Xterra but have an 87 d21 with 250k on original clutch. Also had a 2003 S.C. Frontier that was awesome. They ruined the looks of new ones IMO. Always has good luck with nissan.

I just wish we could get the LC 70 series in the U.S. of A.

Ya I loved that Xterra, it was really peppy too. Felt extremely smooth on bumpy dirt roads. I believe the Xterras are an SUV body on a Titan truck frame, and it's a shame they were discontinued. Too many '' crossover's vehicles '' destroyed sales... Which is a shame, because nobody buys a cross over to off road with

Well i know the 2003 frontier and Xterra SC 4x4's came with a 10.5 C200 rear diff with 4.63 gears. Extremely heavy duty. I drive a 16 frontier at work. Rides nice and plenty of power but very cheap interior.

What are your honest opinions on the Frontier vs Tacoma in terms of like power and reliability maybe off-road use?

I have deeply considered getting a frontier pro-4x for some while. The thing is is if I buy a new Tacoma off road then they only offer the manual transmission in a double cab and the same is true with the frontier pro-4x so I figure if I'm going to have to sacrifice bedspace I might as well save $10,000 as well.

I have no experience with the frontier though, however my experience with the Xterra was great.

I don't know if you're a big guy but from my testing, I would steer clear from the Frontier, to me it was even smaller on the inside than the Tacoma is.

You may save the $10,000 on the front end, but it won't hold its value like the Tacoma and you'll lose all of that when you sell the Frontier. There's also a reason why the Tacoma outsells the Frontier, it's better, more reliable and looks better. This is a slightly biased forum though...

I would have to agree with a lot of what was said. Frontier resale drops fast. The new frontiers just dont look good to me but the Tacoma looks great. Ive never had problems with any nissans ive owned but I can't say what the overall reliability is. Off road, I think they would be similar stock but you have so many aftermarket options for the Tacoma vs the Nissan pro. Power wise the Frontier has the low end power the Tacoma is missing but overall power is similar. You can add a lot of mods to the Frontier for 10K so I guess you need to test drive both and get what you like best. I will say I'm glad I changed to Toyota even with the minor tsb and recall issues that have all been fixed

I rented a Frontier SV for a week. My review here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/nissan-frontier-quirks-and-oddities.340658/

Before I got my Tacoma, I cross-shopped with the Frontier Pro-4X. It was surprising to see the Tacoma's lease payments were about 1/3 lower than the Frontier's, at least with the down payment and lease terms I selected. And that's purely on the strength of the Tacoma's higher residual value.

I think they should bring the Xterras back! It was the only vehicle in its class that came with a third pedal AND 4-wheel drive if the buyer so desired. Fully loaded stick shift Xterras are rare though...

When I say "fully loaded," I mean sunroof, Rockford Fosgate stereo, upgraded wheels, etc...

That said, my uncle has a yellow 2002 Nissan Frontier XE (equivalent to a 2nd gen DCSB in terms of cab/bed). It's 2WD with a 3.3L V6 and 5-speed manual. Back when I still a novice at driving stick, I stalled my uncle's Frontier no less than half a dozen times attempting to back it up his (my uncle's sharply inclined driveway).

My uncle bought this Frontier new in late 2002 and as of 2017 has put about 130K miles on it. My uncle wanted a truck, and my aunt said he could buy a truck if he got a yellow one. She thought this would deter him from buying a truck, but it didn't. 15 years later...

It still has the original clutch. There is a dent in the tailgate that was caused by a hit-and-run backer-upper, and a scratch on one of the front fenders of unknown origin. Nearly 15 years after my uncle bought this truck, the A/C still blows ICE COLD and to my knowledge has never been recharged or serviced in any way. My only gripe about the truck is that it has a CD player but no iPod hookup. My uncle does not have an iPod and typically only listens to talk radio, so he sees no point. The speakers are actually pretty good. If I bought his truck, that outdated head unit would be the first thing to go, replaced with the same Boss double-DIN head unit I have in my Tacoma. Aside from the aforementioned cosmetic damage, the truck is in near-mint condition. It runs and drives great, as my uncle is very OCD about preventive maintenance.

???? I thought it was the opposite - I think to me it's because of the better (IMO) seating position in the Frontier that makes it feel bigger inside to me. Had an Xtrerra - great vehicle.

Well the Tacoma certainly holds it's value better, but if you are saving $10K on a new Frontier then who cares. It comes out in the wash.

Plus it seems up here in Canada they hold their value a bit better than down in the US.

If their trucks are built anything like the Sentra I just had as a rental for the last week, I'll stick with my beat up Tacoma.
