Noise from front end while turning in 4x4

15 double cab short bed 4x4 sr5. 40k miles . Only in 4x4, only after turning in one direction for a bit. Makes a clicking that increases in frequency if the wheel isn't not straightened. This is on low traction, off roading conditions.

Any suggestions where to look?

 

Look for a torn CV boot and grease. It sounds like all your grease has been spun out.

Stop making sharp turns in 4WD and you can drive a long time before it fails.

Mine was dry for 275000 miles. It clicked the whole time while turning in 4WD. I intended to change it when it failed. It never did.

 

I can have it in 4x4 and crank the wheel and it doesn't start making noise immediately, only after i've gone a few feet, as soon as I straighten the wheel, it stops.

 

Take quick look under the truck, then go from there.

Any excessive play in the CV axles when you grab them by hand?
