Air Fuel sensor. It will be the one furthest up the exhuast closest to the engine.

I repect your opinion alot, but Im just wondering how you come to that. Everything in my notes points to the A/F sensor.

ok i got it buy crc maf cleaner and see if that works if not the replace just my mafs which is by the intake correct? there is nothing wrong with my o2 sensor or air/fuel ratio sensor according to these two codes? two codes , one part, two solutions right?

    From my notes:

All of these codes are related to the bank one side of the engine which the one closest to the firewall, the po031 is a malfunction of the bank 1,#1 A/F ratio sensor located in the exhaust manifold, the 37 code is related to the bank 1,#2 O2 sensor located after the cat converter, the 2238 is directly related to the a/f sensor but is somewhat irrelevant because replacing the sensor will take care of that code as well. At this time I would replace the bank1/#1 sensor and clear the codes then see if the p0037 comes back, it may not because it may have just been reacting to the malfunctioning air/fuel ratio sensor. So replace the a/f sensor in the exhaust anifold near the firewal, that should solve the problem.

no..............clean your maf sensor first, which i way cheaper than replacing anything, ....then go from there.......replace your upstream 02 sensor before replacing anything else. cause its are gonna go before your maf does.

Exactly. I was looking at a different code when I said intake tube. Sorry.

    Some help please.

    P0031 & P2238 on my 04 DC (3.4L) W/ 150K miles.
Clear the codes and it comes back in seconds. Did that 4-5 times.
Replaced the O2 sensor (A/F Sensor) in front of the cat.
    Cleared the codes.
Drove for about 1 minute and CEL is back on. This time just P2238.
Cleared that 4-5 times and it comes back.

    I am using a Denso 234-9003 sensor
Old one was Toyota 89467-35060 (Denso)

    No other apparent issues.

Seems like most of the P2238 advice is to replace the O2 sensor. Done that. now where do i go?
I have already tried to clean the mass airflow sensor in the filter box with carb cleaner.

It is time for SMOG and a CEL will not get me very far.

    Thanks
    Matthew

O2 sensors. I first bought "OEM" (Denso i think) ones that had the same part numbers and they did now work. As soon as i bought the Toyota brand one the problem was solved. No idea why the OEM did not work.

I just experienced this same issue. Got p2238/p0031 codes but my p2238 went away but the p0031 stayed. Jeez. Only thing is that my Denso is 234-4206. I guess new toyota sensor is my next option.

Denso is what you want, that's what Toyota uses (OEM). Unless it was the wrong Denso sensor?

Also, be careful where you buy them...lot of fakes floating around on Amazon and eBay. I only get Denso sensors from the parts store if I can.

Toyota might brand them differently when you buy then directly from Toyota, but Denso makes them.

FYI when I got these codes earlier this year, it was because my battery tie down had come loose and was making contact with the battery terminals. Shorted out the system I guess and threw these codes for some reason. Once I fixed the tie down and cleared the codes they went away and never came back.

Thanks for the input. I should get the original OEM parts this coming monday. It cost a good number of bucks but I guess it's for the best.
