Towing a travel trailer

Hi all.
I have done a bit of searching info about towing a TT with my 2014 V6 Taco w/towing pack. Little confused. Here is what I want to do. Pull a TT with dry wt of 3060# and Max cargo of 820#. Tongue wt is 420#. I figure to have maybe 600# passengers and stuff in truck. That's a lot of numbers all adding up to I am not sure if this is a good match or not. Any help greatly appreciated. Oh and yes I plan to pull in mountains sometimes. Thanks in advance.

Standard recommendations are to replace ATF trans cooler with largest you can fit; flush ATF every 30-50K; replace diff gear oil every 30K (use synthetic

$30 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90) or sooner.

 

I believe you are good weight-wise with tow pkg rated at 6400-6500 lbs. Would be concerned with height of the trailer - tall trailer can add a lot of drag. Check tongue weight fully loaded, you may be border-line on needing a weight-distributing hitch. Is it a single or dual axle trailer?

 

Get a brake controller and a weight distribution hitch and you'll be fine. If you have an auto, don't use D when towing. I'd also recommend an ultragauge or scangauge to monitor transmission temp.

When packing, put as much in the trailer as possible instead of loading up your truck.

My trailer is about 5k lbs loaded and I tow it in the mountains. The truck will maintain 55-60mph going up the passes if you're not afraid to make it work.

What gradient mountains are you planning to tow that trailer over? I'm guessing that will have significant impact if of the Taco can safely handle it going up . . . And down too. For the record I don't tow but if I did that would be one of my initial considerations.

 

I pull about the same amount of weight.

This is our setup - probably around 5,200 pounds with two bikes + Ruckus, gear and a full tank of fresh water. It was dog slow until I installed a supercharger - now it's just slow. But even before the S/C we could get over the 12,000 foot Colorado passes - in 2nd gear at 23 mph Trailer brakes are a must and my clutch is living on borrowed time.

I have Dakars and airbags - if I didn't I would definitely get a W/D hitch but with the heavier springs and airbags I don't need it.
