I tried those cubbies but didn't much like them for straps. Then you have to climb into the bed to get the straps out to attach something to your trailer. The bucket method was nice because you could tote it around the trailer or truck to tie down different points and then everything was all together in one place, but then I was always untangling straps.

IMG_6996.jpg I use the larger red snap on brand tie downs from Costco, I've been happy with them. I think I only paid $25.00 for a 4 pack of them.

Best ratchet straps: harbor freight. Get a bunch on sale for like $6 for 4 and just buy new ones when they shit out. It’s bound to happen. Corrosion, fraying, etc. You can get like 10 sets of harbor freight for the price of 1 set of good ones.

I abuse the hell out of my ratchet straps so it’s not worth buying a good set.

I’ve also never broken one (in tension). Just given them away or retired them when they get any damage. They’re not junk really, just not the best. Same as you get from Home Depot or Tractor Suppuy anything like that.

I also have a set of 6 “keeper” brand (like the truckers use) for my trailer when I haul big things there. Too big to use for small cargo though.

EDIT: how has nobody said Harbor Freight yet?! In 4 pages of posts?!

I am a pretty smart guy...at least I'd like to think so.

Then I try to use rachet straps. I go full retarded. Half the time I end up using them like rope.

I use Kubota 1-1/2" Rachet straps. They have worked great for the year and a half I've had them. Leave them out on the trailer half the time and still work great.

 Bought these on a suggestion of another member, I couldn't be happier with them. Very very useful.

I didn't read through this entire thread, but I'll second Ancra. I have an assortment of straps. I have four Ancra straps that are over 20 years old and the rest are cheap stuff I've picked up here and there. The Ancras work and work good. They're not ratchet straps, they're the pull through style. Never had them fail or loosen up. And that includes two cross country trips with a motorcycle tied down in the bed of a truck.

Two tips for ratchet straps: Someone else mentioned pulling the slack through and then ratcheting. Yes. Then tie your flapper off; suggested under the ratchet. The other tip is to close the ratchet. This locks the ratcheting mechanism.

Have about ten of those from when I was on active duty. Some are more than 20 years old and still working great.

I also have a few 2" high capacity tow straps that can act as a come-along or tow strap in a pinch.

Comming from years of experience in my younger days as a whitewater guide, the only acceptable way to rig for a flip is by using hoopie webbing with bowline knots and trucker’s hitches. Those newfangled ratcheting straps are only as good as long as their open ends don’t unhook, but they sure are convenient. I even bought a few large ones for my off-road emergency repair kit in case I pop out a tire bead: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D8MFXZr36hs
