Anyone spray paint their rims any other color than the duplicolor silver or graphite? I have a set of the 4runner 5 stars and I'm looking for something in between the two colors (no black) to spary paint them. I just think the silver is too light and the graphite is too dark for my silver truck. Ive searched google tirelessly and any pictures or options appreciated. thanks

Plasti dip, then paint over the dip. Works the same but can remove, have done it several times over the years. Never has come off without me making it. I used rustoleum hammered gray, it's perfect!

The rustoleum hammered gray is really close to the scs gunmetal wheels I have now. Duplicolor makes an auto paint that matches scs perfectly. I used it to paint the bolts on my scs SR8's

Never heard of painting over dip before. Looks great. Do you put a clear over the paint?

I have duplicolor graphite on my old wheels and picked up a 2nd set of wheels that I had my buddy paint #ToyotaMGM

Old wheels as comparison, I rattle canned these without primer several years ago.

Never clear coated them. I came up with the idea back in 2010 I think. Have had 3 sets of tires and did dip/paint combo. Tried a few colors as well. Always liked the hammered gray best. That's the best part, try a color if you don't like it, clean wheels and paint over old! It's like an m&m thick candy shell!

That duplicolor graphite is too dark for me... I bought rustoleum "weathered steel" which is perfectly in between the silver and graphite spray paint wheel colors out there. I'll post pics as soon as im done refurbishing them.

Those look worse than mine - I'll post pics when I complete them - letting the 2 coats of etching primer cure a bit (and go to work & stuff...).

I used aircraft stripper by Rust-Oleum, and im now in the process of sanding them down a bit. Here they are now after stripping and prior to sanding.

I literally bought the same rims as you have there and I'm going to spray the duplicolor gunmetal on them. I hear that the duplicolor cans spray better then rustoleum cans. Actually bought all the materials to sand and prep a few minutes ago. If you google 4runner duplicolor theres a guy who did them in gunmetal that looks amazing for rattle cans

    For prep:
small wire wheel - disc not a cup - the finer the wires you can get the better. I used Harbor Freight stuff
sandpaper - I used 220 wet/dry from HF - it falls apart fast when wet and clogs fast when dry...Get 3M brand paper or emery cloth in fine grits.

I used a scraper, soap and water & some degreaser to clean. Then the wire wheel to get the corrosive spots, I used some 60 grit to get at the areas the wheel wouldn't reach. 220 wet/dry to scuff the clear coat and other surfaces.

Self etching primer - 2 coats. That's where I'm at now. I need to scuff the primer coat before color.

I need to get my color - 2 coats - then clear coat - 2 coats. If I cant get the wheel color to match the center caps I'll just derp the caps black.

Are you also cleaning and painting the back of the wheel ? How much time do you have in this doing 4 wheels . Im going to get a price on sandblasting the rims and doing the paint my self .Seems like a lot of work :help:. :crapstorm:
