Just got my 2017 Tacoma and I know from having the 2013 that the tailgates are weak. Bent mine while loading on my Street Glide . So I have decided to make a stronger one to load my bike and take it to Florida this winter. Purchased new hinges from the dealer for C$160.00 for the hinges and 4 bolts. The frame was made from a stationary bike that one of my neighbours were throwing out. Have not decided what to use to finish it, either a piece of expanded metal or plywood. Will post more photos when finished and loading the bike on the truck.

Huh... Well that's something. Should build a lid for it that you can open from the outside when the gate it up for extra storage space. Keep trail straps shackles and backup booze im there.
