I like the look a lot, wider stance, but is there a discussion about this. Is this a good idea or not on a 4wd??

Absolutely no difference between wheel spacers and wheels with more offset. Track width is track width..... Just get 'em tight when you put them on and forget about 'em. I've ran 1" Bora spacers on my 2nd gen going on 70,000 miles with NO issues.

The spaced out wheels on mine protected the body from a deep rut. They DO have some function as well. They won't hurt anything as long as you get reputable ones and follow directions.

Make sure they are hub centric and only buy Bora or SpiderTrax spacers stay away from the cheap ebay crap. I've had mine on for about 1k miles with no issues what so ever just torq them down and use blue lock tight as per manufacture recommendations. They make the truck look way better with a more aggressive stance.

very good information and interesting reading bud.
My 2016 TRD came with 16" wheels and tires of course.
I pulled the ones off of my 2007 Tacoma and installed them on the 16 because they had nice 17" wheels on them.
And the tires are new Wranglers that I understand are 1" taller than the stock tires.
when the tire guys swappped them over, he commented about my 17" wheels that they looked like they were off of a FJ Cruiser, I actually dont
know but it makes me wonder if the offset is even correct on them for my Tacoma but I dont have any rubbing and they seem really solid on the highway.
Anyway with all of that said, I see that these spacers are generally available from 1-2" thicknesses.
Is there a generally thought of thickness that seems to be common and when you go beyond, you are pushing the limits?

Difficult to say what width are most common I'm running 1.5" and would not go any wider than that. I have seen guys with 2" spacers on their Tacos. Just depends on what you want to accomplish.

1.5 sounds good. If I knew how much I was already getting from going from a 25 offset to a 15 offset, Id know how much spacer I need to get to the 1.5"
I think some of it is already made up in the offset change but not sure how much
