Wasn't expecting to read that Toyota plans to upgrade their headlights for the 2018 Tacoma. Curious if it will be worth it enough for me to swap my 2017 headlights. I haven't read anywhere about a headlight update. Has anyone else?

What time in the video are you talking about? They used all 2017 models in that video...

Also I think they are talking about the automatic high beams that come along with TSS.

In the article it states "Toyota says its 2018 Tacoma will feature upgraded headlights and a standard autobraking system that can detect pedestrians."

I attached the link as my source for the info.

Auto high beams aren't an upgrade or am I being technical? That's a feature that can be added since it's the camera in the windshield that just flips your high beams on.

I think you are taking the word of a crappy media outlet (blog) too seriously. They are journalists. English majors. Not car (or Tacoma) nuts.

There's no upgrade anyone has spoken of for 2018 headlights other than the automatic high beams that come as part of TSS.

I read somewhere that the tail lights will be LED. I wouldn't be surprised if they did something with the headlights as well. may not be much though

Chevy had this problem with the Silverado and updated the headlights to HID in 2016.
I guess I'm hoping Toyota does the same or something similar.

I highly doubt that. We are lucky we got LED DRL. They certainly won't do HID, HID technology is becoming obsolete thanks to the advancement in LED technology. To my knowledge the only Toyota vehicles with LED headlights are the Corolla, Avalon, and Land Cruiser. You might be lucky to get a redesign of the headlight to make it look more aggressive, if we are really lucky maybe we will get LED turn signals but do not expect LED low beams. They would not invest the money to develop that so soon into this generation.

My take is they'll do it as a mid-cycle facelift, which might coincide with the Ford ranger release

I've never seen an auto high beam on. Not saying it doesn't exist, I've just not seen it.

I've seen auto headlights on (even in my '98 Sonoma) and I've seen auto headlight dimming (started in the 60's, wasn't too good)

But not an auto headlight to high beam.

Anyway, I bet it won't be as easy to add as you imply. Not that it matters to me, as I don't care to have it. I know when I need/can use more light, and I'm still willing to invest the energy to flip the switch myself. :D

Ditto. Auto high beam in my Genesis, with the forward collision, lane departure, adaptive cruise blah blah means the high beams will turn off for oncoming traffic.

I'm not aware of any auto high beam system smart enough to know when it's safe or appropriate for you to automatically ENGAGE high beams. Only smart enough to know when you SHOULDN'T have them engaged. IE: oncoming traffic.

There was just a TV commercial on for a Rav4, they rattled off the safety sense stuff which includes auto high beams

I have the auto highs in my Sienna. You leave the high beam stalk in the on position and they do turn on automatically when safe and off when it detects oncoming traffic.

The Sequoia and Tundra are getting LED options in the next gen. Never saw the Tacoma with a quote for LED option (but I could be completely wrong).

And Ranger will have LED HL option when it debuts.

BMW has had automatic high beams for a long time, but not in the US due to regulatory limitations. BMW's technology also uses a camera but can independently dim the lights and turn them a few degrees to prevent blinding oncoming traffic.

I don't expect this from Toyota. As much as I'd love HID's, I agree with the comment above that LED technology is overtaking HID's so it's unlikely we'll see any upgrades to low or high beams for 2018.

US lighting laws are old and antiquated Audi had some of the most amazing lighting tech that they can't bring over here because of old laws. Active matrix LED headlights and laser headlights are on the bleeding edge of car lighting tech and here we have halogens

Not sure on your source but when I read it here (in the 2018 chatter thread), I'm pretty sure someone misconstrued "LED brake light" for "LED Taillights." Which are two different things. The group just ran with it.

My guess is their "upgraded" headlights will be the smoked type like on the pro. They did it on 2nd gen after a few years of the all chrome. It would be really cool to see factory LED headlights come on the truck.
