I am just an idiot and need some help. don't laugh

I am not an audio guy or a video guy or anything. I couldn't even change the oil if I had to but I absolutely love this truck. I would like to learn and hoping you veterans could help me out. I know I want to upgrade the stock stereo but I do not know what I need or even what things are. Here is a list of the questions I have so far and I am sure more will come

1) What are tweeters and do I need them? Does the truck come with them already?

2) What would I need to have crystal clear sound but not the booming bass.

3) Would installing an amp using the stock speakers help or would it be better to buy an amp and buy new speakers as well?

4) How would you go about choosing the speakers(not much on display here in Corpus Christi)?

5) For those that have the pioneer avic z110bt- does the motorized fold down face annoy you? Does it give you enough room to put in the SD disk?

you would most likely blow the stock speakers if you amped them.


don't be scared..installing a stereo is pretty much plug and play. if you get an amp and speakers, just make sure that you get an amp that is pumping out the same watts (RMS) that your speakers can handle.

beyond that, if you can hook up a dvd to a tv, you can handle the install.

 

This is opening a whole new world and I can see some major purchases. Thank you for the info. Is it a good idea to buy components from the same brand? Polk audio amp and polk audio component speakers?

 

You can mix it up. All up to u and what u want. Like me I have Pioneers in my front and kenwoods in the rear. Kenwoods do not have as much bass as the pioneers do. Just my 2 cents

 

I have the Pioneer 4200DVD with the same face system as the one you mentioned. It folds all the way down so there is plenty of room for an sd.

 

Just my opinion here, but when buying speakers I go with manufacturers who specialize in speakers .. IE Boston Acoustics, Polk Audio, Infinity ..etc To me, they always seem to sound better. Usually they are a little more expensive however.

I have yet to come across a manufacturer who makes the best of both.

Both can get expensive and with speakers, just like home speakers .. usually you get what you pay for.

 

I just installed the Avicz110bt. My only concern about the fold down face is how little clearance it has with the metra dash kit. I had some trouble with it not folding down at first because it jammed up on the bottom of the dash kit however i was able to get it corrected,

As far as room yes it has plenty of room to fold down and insert an SD card.

So far the HU is awesome! It sounds extremely clear.

The day after I bought my taco I pulled the lousy stock speakers & installed the Pioneer ones I yanked form my old truck before they turn in into a Cubed Taco!

You will find a lot of good information about the system you want, if you hang around this forum a little while. A lot of good information here on everything from a simple audio system to a full blown overhaul. I think I settled on what I want to install, finally, mostly from just reading up, searching, and doing a little research.

The only problem you will find around here, from what I have noticed, is you may change your mind several times before you decide on what you want. Some guys like specific brands, others have different ideas on specifics, and you will find yourself sure of something, then read something else the next day. But if you just read the questions, and the responses, you will eventually find what you are looking for. As OH-Man pointed out, Crutchfield is a great place to learn about things like wiring, amps, and even reviews on some products you may be looking at.

 

general rule of thumb, dont replace things just to replace them. My suggestions to people through the years has been this: Start with doing things 1 at a time. If you can easily swap the headunit, start there. that is the "heart" of the whole system. Speakers after that, then amp and small sub, then amp the highs. (trying to keep the lingo to a minimum here)

If it were me, i would do the headunit first. (which i just did in mine). Then the front speakers. The rears will most likely stay factory as i use them barely. After competeing for many years, my systems usually have a strong front stage, with bare minimum rear fill. From there then you can do amplifiers to set the sytem to your liking.

If you follow these steps, you will hear the differences and usually wont waste any money. Alot of people will say to rip out everything and start over, however if you have the money to do that, then by all means go for it. I had a lot of success setting customers up with stages of install's then just doing it all in one shot. It makes more sense that way. my opinion
