I am NOT a mechanic. I have never done work to any of my vehicles, but this one is different. I want to learn to take care of Jackson (yes, I refer to my Taco as a "him"), but I don't know how. I have invested in a service manual, and have some degree of access to a shop (my friend is a foreman and professional). I want to learn for my own experience, but also so I'm not constantly nagging my buddy to help me. Anyone have any good ideas on how to get started, and maybe some smaller/easier projects to get started? Or am I hopeless? hahaha!

Sounds like you have a lot of what you need to get started. You've come here (so many great resources) and you have a buddy to help you when things are over your head.

Just make sure you have a complete tool set, and you should be good to go on most things.

    EDIT**
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ckets-and-wrenches-for-2nd-gen-tacoma.158302/

Has pretty much everything you'll ever need. Don't go out and buy everything at once, just make sure you have what you need before you attempt to do any work.

I started with a 50cc dirtbike when I was about 7 years old. Invest some time in understanding basics and have a good set of tools. Tools are expensive. I had some of my dads hand-me-downs when I started fixing my own stuff. Could never really afford new stuff when I was younger so I bought broken stuff and fixed it. Now I'm at the point where I can afford to buy new stuff and live comfortably but I still enjoy working on my own stuff. Not gonna pay some other grease monkey to work on my truck when I can fix it myself.

Also, if you're bored, come on here and read as many threads as you can. Even if your truck isn't having that problem. It helps you learn more about Jackson

I have fucked up my fair share of stuff. Any mechanic will tell you the same. The important thing is learn from that mistake and don't do it again

Having the truck already off the ground to where you can get to mostly everything easily by crawling underneath without having to jack it up is pretty awesome.

I have one of these (a comparable version thats several years old) that I keep in my Truck all the time. It's a good starting point and will cover all basic maintenance you'll be doing. Although mine didn't come with a 10mm wrench, so I had to invest a couple bucks on that. But its worth every penny.

Gear wrenches are the best tool ever made. God bless the man that invented the gear wrench.

I would suggest oil changes and spark plugs... sit for a while and let that absorb then move on to something else.

A different buddy of mine helped me change the plugs, so perhaps I'll do the next oil change when that rolls around...

Basic maintenance is a good thing to learn.

Don't be in a rush. Take half a day to change the oil if need be, speed comes with practice, not with learning.

Have someone show you/help you a time or two, or watch a few YouTube videos. Even while doing it. You'll recognize what they're doing if you're under the truck following the steps in real time, and be able to identify all the parts they're showing you.

Haynes or Chilton manuals are $20-25 here in my area, and they aren't to be considered the end all, be all - but for someone getting their feet wet they're a good resource with step by step instruction for basic maintenance tasks. For the price, it's a good resource.

What level of "take care of" do you want to be able to perform.
