No it's not. Synthetic oils don't break down, only the additives do. What's important is making sure you have a quality filter to catch contaminants.

You are basing your opinion off of assumptions and not modern science.

Oil should be changed at a minimum yearly, at least in most places in the US because of temp changes. So how long a person can realistically take their OCI will vary. I know some people who only put 5K a year on their cars. I put around 25K on my truck per year. I was changing my oil at 10K and it doesn't come out nasty. It actually comes out in good condition it's just darker than when it went in. I've had Blackstone Labs tell me I could take my oil I normally take to 10K out to 13K and see if I could do longer than that.

What is important is buying quality oil and filters.

synthetic oils 100% break down.... they do not last forever, they last longer than standard oils. But like stated the biggest thing is the contaminants associated with combusting gas that gets into the oil. The additive / detergent packages can only hold so much of these contaminantes. But hey, aint my motor, you go ahead and drive 20k miles on a motor toyota designed to have oil changed every 5.

Toyota recommends dino oil and changes every 5k, not full synthetic. (They now use full synthetic and recommend every 10K. which is a good standard recommendation since for most people that puts them close to a 1 year interval).

What Toyota recommends is not the ultimate standard. They usually recommend what makes them more money not not necessarily what is optimal for the vehicle or performance.

Look at how bad our stock suspensions suck. Obviously Toyota engineers don't always know what's best.

    Another example is our frames.

I could change my oil with synthetic every month and it wouldn't impact my budget one bit. $25 for a jug of oil isn't going to break me, hell I can blow that much for a meal at Five Guys.

Honestly, I don't care what anyone says (including Blackstone), I go by the way the oil looks... if it still looks fairly clean on the dipstick at 5k miles, I will run it longer... if it looks dark, it's getting changed.

stock suspension is fine for 99.9% of the tacoma drivers out there. Frames are also fine outside of rust belt....

We all know that oil is good now adays and can lube for a long time, but like stated, its the shit that gets in the oil that needs to get out of the motor every 5k miles or every 6 months what ever comes first.

A 5qt jug of the annual protection is nearly double the cost of standard mobil 1 synthetic.... and when you factor in that the annual protection oil is NOT available for the mail in rebate its actually 4x more expensive than mobil 1 full syn (22 for full syn at wallmart - 12 MIR that always pops up = 10 bucks for 5 quarts of 0w-30 / 5w-30 full syn vs 40 for the annual protection), you are literally saving 0 dollars if you did 4 oil changes with standard mobil 1 full syn at every 5k vs 1 change at 20k..... all to save a little time? with the possibility of hurting your motor and gnarly sludge buildup..... Go right ahead and be my guest.

And my take on oil is, no one cares but here goes, even if the synthetic does not break down thats fine but it does turn dark and does anyone know what the dark is? It is carbon and does anyone know what carbon is? it is a grinding compound. I for one dont want any grinding compound down in my bearing, cam shaft or rings. So, what to do about that? Very simple, Keep it as clean as you can.

10k is not pushing it. I go 9k now and have been having oil analysis' done on my oil for years. No breakdown in oil composition and filtration is still perfect. Don't waste your time/money with 3 or even 5k intervals. It's a mindset that needs to change.

Nah. Just because it's dark doesn't mean there is carbon, and even if there was carbon it doesnt mean it has to be changed. You ever heat olive or vegetable oil while cookling? It gets darker and it's not due to carbon ( as there isn't any present), it's due to heat. That being said, carbon from gas engines is so minuscule it shouldn't even be in the discussion.

Opinions are fine, but people are making falseclaims that a 20k OCI using oil and filters designed for it is going to lead to engine sludge.

I'm fine with opinions, hate when people just make shit up. ;)

Science has already determined OCI with properly designed products can be safely extended to 25,000 miles.

No one needs you to determine anything.

I change my oil every 10k. I use Mobil1 high mileage synthetic with a half quart of STP oil treatment. I have about 9000 since my last one and the oil is still golden on the dipstick with a slight brown to it. Debating running a mobil 1 filter so i dont have to change it for a toyota one every 5k. Anyone think thats a bad idea or should i stick OEM filter wise.

You could try running an OEM filter for 10k and then have the oil tested by Blackstone labs to see how the filter did (seriously doubt it would be an issue after 10k). Or just go with a Mobil 1 filter.

I don't think the OEM filter has any added benefit.

You could look to see if the same OEM filter is used on the 3rd Gens. Their OCI are 10k. If it works for the new Tacos it will work for the older ones for 10k.

@MurderedTacoV2 I use OEM filters, and have no problem with filtration at higher OCIs. If anything, check out some WIX filters. It's what I run on the street rod and they'd be my next choice if I wasn't already satisfied w/ OEM.

I was just talking to some of the guys working in toyota here and they said that the new dealer standard for vehicles that run full synthetic use a regular oem filter for 10k OCI. We good thank you my question is answered.
