I def agree. Stuff like brushed car washes will put a beating on 3m bra material. But after a couple years you can just peel it off and put another on. If you know how to apply it you just buy it by larger rolls.

A few mods here and there and counting....
Rejuvenated! Nice work. I went the lazy route and bought a pair excellent condition oem sport headlamps and will transplant the lens/bezel over to my retrofits.

Thanks, def the end life of these headlight casings. I used heavy duty poly glue re doing this since when these are toast everything will be shot. I am going to put a gor-tex material patch over the breathing port and also probally a silica pack that will hang a little on the back of the shroud. I think the moisture wrecks the insides first.

Anybody here do the inside of the lens?

I bought some OEM headlights on Ebay in "excellent" condition that had all kinds of gunk on the inside which looked to be caused by the bulbs ...
I took them apart to do a retrofit, and wasn't able to clean that gunk off without putting all kinds of swirls on the inside of the lens (I used a brand new microfiber glasses cloth, but the gunk must've caused the scratching).

I tried using the Meguire's kit (with the sandpaper, plastX, and UV restorer) but I can see the polish marks and swirls... and I think I made it worse! Am I completely screwed?

Followup question: Would the lenses of cheap knockoffs fit on the OEM backing?

Yea, cheap lenses will fit knock offs. Plastx is actually a higher grit compound than people believe. Luckilyy since its on the inside it wont get weathered. Use a finer grit polish. Id say the best bang for the buck and works great is the Nu-Finish polish in the orange botrle. You can find it anywhere.

Awesome! I happen to have a bottle of that lying around - will try it out. Thanks for the suggestion!
