We have lived here in 29 since 1985. Family stayed here while I deployed or geo-bach'ed it at other duty stations. Our first grandson (now a Sgt in Army Infantry) was born in the old Hospital here (now called the Village Center).

Had not CA recently gone full retard (and looking to get worse under the next Governor) we would have probably lived the rest of our lives here. Instead we recently bought a house on 36 acres in St John's, AZ and hope to be there full time by the end of this year.

How much time you got left until retirement?

Flagstaff is nice with all the trees but there are WAY too many people WAY too crowded together up there for out liking. You already have property in Flagstaff?

Our property in St Johns sits right at 6400' so is appreciably cooler then here in 29 or most of AZ for that matter. St John's has a pop of only 3400 people and the closest McDonald's is over 30 miles away from our house. Our closest neighbor is almost 1000yds away. The property is 9 miles outside of town down an isolated county road and when we first visited to check out the property, he came out with a gun to find out what we were doing out there. My kind of guy.

I still have some time to go before I retire at least another 10 years. No property yet. But do like what I see and hear about Arizona in general compared to Nazi California.

I don't mind the crowds in Flagstaff, still better then LA traffic or LA county in general. I'm just looking for some piece and quiet but close enough to civilization haha.

I just can't see getting out in the woods, only to still be living on top of each other. When we drive through Flagstaff I see houses so close to the I40 that I could throw a rock and hit them. Flagstaff is also $$$ for housing, though not as much as trying to live in LA I guess. Williams is a bit more secluded and still just a short trip on the I40 to Flagstaff. Another Marine I talked to was looking there. Personally I would investigate outlying areas for land within an hour's drive of the city.

St John's wasn't too much of a change for us since in 29 we already need to travel to see a doctor or to shop and in fact I find even 29 to be a bit too crowded. From our new house I can see about 8 other homes from horizon to horizon, if I use binoculars. I will miss the excellent care I have been receiving at the Loma Linda VAMC though.

We can continue this via PMs if you like to avoid clogging up the thread.
