I dropped off my Cooper ST Maxx (235/85-R16) tires and asked my local Toyota dealer to mount them on my TRD Off-Road wheels (PTR18-35090-GR). These are the gray, painted wheels with the fake bead-lock ring.

The wheels are 7.5" wide, and Cooper has approved my selected tire size for 6-7.5" rims. Not to mention the countless TW guys who have done the same thing on their Tacoma.

The dealer is saying this combo is a problem. They said things like "need to stretch them", and that they "won't balance properly", and also said if they were able to do it, there would be a substantial up-charge.

    Am I missing something?

    go somewhere else.

anyone should have no problem mounting tires 1/2 inch off spec, such as a 7 inch tire on a 7.5 inch rim
and apparently yours are in spec, so ...seek other tire shop

Go to another dealer, it's probably just that they don't want to do it because the service dept is full or they think you look like youll pay the premium. Why are you going there anyway, there's no benefit, go to Discount Tire or America's Tire.

Thanks guys. I get the same feeling. They think my setup is "non-standard" so they freaked out.

I wanted to try my local Toyota dealer because I had bad luck at Discount Tire. They scratched the shit out of the paint around one of my center hubs. I think it was when they tightened the wing-nut to the hub during balancing. I talked to my Toyota dealer about this, and they claimed they were well aware of these painted TRD wheels and promised not to scratch them.

It's to bad that trained professionals find excuses to avoid work.
I'd be embarrassed to say it can't be done at a full service shop.
They are supposed to be some of the best at working on our vehicles.

Discount Tire will repair or replace any damaged wheels.

Show them the damage before you drive away.

Dealerships are a one stop shop, but tires don't pay shit and you're better off at a tire shop. Dealer for dealer stuff. Tire for tire stuff.

That there was my problem. Too trusting. I didn't notice it until my next tire rotation. :(

Well, I noticed mine immediately but didn't say anything until 15k miles later, when they got scratched again.

I complained about the numerous issues I had in a email they sent me to hear how satisfied I was. Something I delete every time but this once.

I had new wheels in a week, with lugs included, free mount and balance of my tires.

So if you have a legit complaint, make it heard. They want a happy customer and will make it right. Don't complain to the service writers, speak to a store manager (not manager on duty), and be mature about it. Lots of dudes just want free wheels, so if you have a legit complaint of damage and present yourself as such, you shouldn't be hassled or ignored.

I remember back before I started modding and had to replace tires. The dealer would not entertain any tires other than the stock size that they came with for the same bullshit. As others said, go to a different tire shop. Honestly, I was salty at Toyota as they convinced me to stick to the same size when I could of upped it a little bit before I looked into things.

A lot of dealership techs get real uncomfortable any time they're asked to install something "aftermarket". Typically factory parts are a much better fit/finish and much easier to install so they don't want to mess with something that might cause a problem. Tires are obviously a little different but the fact remains they won't want to touch it. Long story short find yourself a good tire shop for tires and alignments. If your truck is lifted and you take it to the dealer for alignment, a lot of times they'll tell you to kick rocks because you've "modded the truck so it can't be put back into spec".

Reasons like this where I question the skill set of dealerships. I don't doubt they have the skill, but at the same time they could charge you extra due to aftermarket specs and "additional" work required.
