Thanks for breaking that down. You said vehicle speed is also used. When changing tire sizes people have been using calibrators to get the speedometer to display correctly. Do you know if the TCU is reading the corrected speed or the uncorrected speed?

For D mode I agree that it is bent on getting to 5th or 6th as quickly as possible. It consistently drops 3-6mph on a slight hill because it won't give the engine more throttle in the current gear. I had a 2017 Camry as my rental car for a week and when cruising at highway speeds I could slightly increase throttle to maintain speed on a slight hill or to speed up to pass someone. Only if I gave it a fair amount of throttle would it then downshift to give me more power. This is how pretty much every automatic I've ever driven works.

I've only had my tacoma for 3 weeks but 5th and 6th gear seem to have no extra power to hold speed on a slight hill or it just completely ignores my throttle increase request. This is by far the most infuriating part of this truck. I find it hard to believe that 5th and 6th gears don't have enough power to hold speed on a hill. I think the ECU is just refusing to use them for acceleration and it drops to 3rd or 4th after I keep giving it more and more throttle.

I'm trying to hold out and learn the truck's OEM traits before buying the tune but I may cave in very soon :)

    So with 1.02B,
Shifting hasn't changed from 1.01B correct?

Normally I don't show proprietary mapping like this but I want to show you guys something, and just how much of a difference this is now going to make. This is going to be my main focus for the automatic transmission trucks. (MTs, you'll be getting love too)

Here are 2 (of the 100) maps that control shifting selection RPM. I removed axis data, sorry can't share that. I've also converted to real world RPM. (see "410RPM" a rpm so low this point is never even used)

Can anyone see what toyota did?
    What they didn't do?

(hint, toyotas lazy. Several maps are flat-lined, which means the truck will NEVER shift differently beyond a certain load point)

    2802na8_09376b57f415009e2ec344a906404386ac541f40.jpg

So for the bottom map, rather than the truck always initiating shift @ 2590 rpm, I can change it to 2590, 3150, 3300, 3450, etc etc with each point on the axis. Allow for a much wider shifting range in each gear.

^^^ Come on Toyota... You can do better than that! 2400 RPM, no shift change for that gear. Then 2600 RPM, no shift change for that gear. This is our problem. @OVTune, thank you for showing this. I can wait for you to fix this!

Thank you for sharing this info - and indeed sad to see Toyota be so lazy here. Does this happen to explain why it seems to want to downshift from 5/6 to 4th so late, under heavy load when the same shifting under light load wouldn't have been as big of a jolting issue?

Wow, sounds like the MT guys should get a discount for doing all these calculations in our heads.

Thanks for sharing this Mat. Without knowing that the X-axis represents, we can only guess it is load or speed, or how many clouds are in the sky at given RPM :)

We do greatly appreciate you sharing this with us. I am certainly excited to see what refinements you can make with this new transmission logic.

As stated before, I'm happy to test in real world driving if you like.

I'm not sure if you ever saw this, but the company that produced the ShiftSense Pro has this on their website. The dashed lines are stock. Between this and what you've provided I have to agree that Toyota was lazy/in a rush. I think we have the Colorado to thank for that.

I personally do NOT want that shift map in my TCU. That's why I never went with shiftsense pro.

Well that really wasnt the point of my post. I think the SSP is good for staying in the power band of the stock tune. What it's not good for is mpg, timings, etc. It's a bandaid.

The point of my post was to showcase Toyotas laziness.

Lol, good one. In all seriousness though, Mat will likely have to drill down a bit to root out all the throttle weirdness in the M/T..

No worries. I could see how it could be viewed that I was asking for SSP shift points. Definetly a no. That shit makes my exhaust drone like crazy.

anyways that's all for now guys. more kits to prepare to get out to the post office today. Thank you for being patient everyone. With these new shift controls (which everyone gets updated free) this is really the turning point in how the truck will perform.

I would by this in a heartbeat if I could make the edits to the shift points myself....and edit the VSS scaling for larger tires.

I came from the COBB Accessport world with their StreetTuner add on to edit my own maps. When I hit the limits of that I went open source.
