Stealing any vehicle is easy if you know how.

    Now wasn't this helpful.

I have it on airplane mode and it did detect that I am home but does not play the sound, maybe I do need the wifi for the "play a sound" feature

Using the ESN and E911 infrastructure, I wouldn't think easily. It would take access to the carriers' internal systems and they're not going to give just anyone that.

Not to say it couldn't be hacked but it wouldn't be a normal use. I don't know for a fact that the police even do, at least normally without a 911 call or without court orders. I just suggest that they technically could.

Most tracking requires an app and would require an activated phone and data (cellular or WiFi access). Another option would be a satellite tracker, like the SPOT (which I have, FWIW) or InReach. They don't require cell service at all but are also not free.

Like what? Writing a ticket for a blinker out? Truth is there's no money in finding a stolen truck. Too busy taxing that ass for window tint or speeding...

Fix the turn signal, don't over tint the windows and don't speed... You shouldn't have to worry about the speeding as you are a " Radarninja ".

The last time I was pulled over by the police was in 1982 for a failure to dim the headlights and I beat it in court.

    No worries. :)

That wasn't the point @Radarninja was making. He's saying it sounds like writing tickets for broken tail lights is higher priority than finding car thieves to the regular beat cop. I guess LoJack being a passive system doesn't distract from their primary task of writing citations and they pay the cost to outfit cruisers with the equipment.

Ya it sucks when they do their job.

I would disagree, it read to me like he was slamming the police for doing their job "taxing that ass"

Out of a 100 things a cop can do, finding a stolen car probably ranks near the bottom, and rightfully so.

And to blow radarninja's mind, more often then not, a simple traffic infraction ( speeding, blinker, parking, etc) is one of the primary means of locating stolen vehicle.

We'll probably have to disagree that finding stolen cars should be a low priority. I feel theft is one of the actual crimes, along with murder and assault. There is a clear case of a victim and a perpetrator, no convolution of making The People a victim. Government and society at large are amoral and indifferent, so they can't be a victim.
That makes sense, I know traffic stops are in fact one of the primary triggers to solving crimes.

That's the dichotomy, isn't it though? Stopping people to check their papers may eventually find criminals but I don't feel it's worth the privacy intrusion to filter 100 people by writing citations to maybe find 1 who committed a real crime. And since it was already admitted that finding stolen cars is very rare it's also apparently not a very effective method anyway.

Privacy intrusion when you are breaking the law? How about follow the law?

Dudes with really dark tint ( especially windshield tint), blinkers that dont work, or brake lights that are out annoy the shit out of me. Im glad they get tickets cause they are deserved.

Cops are known for going after low hanging fruits. Their broken windows enforcement policy produces much outrage across all communities, especially colored neighborhoods. This is old news. I'm not saying don't ticket the tinted windows or speeding. I'm saying we're have much bigger problems they can direct their effort at instead of raking in the cash.

We're not going to turn this thread into a police bashing session

I would also like to note that when I was a cop, the very first vehicle pursuit I was in was a stolen toyota matrix. Do you want to know why I attempted the stop? A burnt out headlight. Resulted in 4 arrests, recovery of 2 stolen guns, cleared over 50 burglaries, and of course the now totaled Matrix.

My 07 Sport has a chipped key. This I know because I didnt know what a chipped key was and this key was too big and bulky for my liking so I took it into the bench grinder and started in on it... HUGE oooops! I had to get a new one made for $165.

I would say, that is chipped. Be careful with it, they are expensive.
