So I just had a lift kit installed on my 2016 Tacoma trd sport. I remember talking to the tech about wheels and tires and specifically being told that he recommends the 16 over 17 because the 17 inch require trimming to stop the tires from rubbing. Well I pick up my truck and when I got home I realize that they installed the 17 inch tires. I am going back tomorrow to talk them but I was wondering what the pluses and minuses are of the 17 vs the 16 and if there is an advantage to running either.

A 32" tall tire is still a 32" tall tire, regardless of which wheel (16", 17", 18", etc) size that you go with. The amount of sidewall is what is going to be the difference. A 16" wheel will have more sidewall for that same 32" tire than that of the 17" and 18"

Some wheels sizes will have a better selection of tires available and may offer better pricing. For example; I was wanting to get the Nitto Ridge Grapplers, but they are not available for 16" wheels.

IMO, it boils down to personal preference and how you are going to use the vehicle and what the wheel/tire combo you are going to put on.

Edit: Also a big factor when choosing your wheels will be the offset, backspacing, and wheel width in combination with what size tire that you go with.
