Hi all, I'm heading to Moab with my stock 2017 TRD off road Tacoma. What trails can a stock rig handle? I'm fairly confident off-road, but never been to Moab.
Maybe the better question is what trails do I stay away from?

I drove up La Sal Pass a few weeks ago in my stock OR. It was pretty fun. Trail gets a little tight at the top but nothing too crazy. I can't speak for any other trails in moab, this was the only one I did.

Gemini Bridges shouldn't be a problem if you take it slow and are careful.
Long Canyon won't be a problem either
Shaffer Trail (in Canyonlands) should be a fun drive too

Long canyon was washed out above the rock tunnel when I went in June. If you are bold enough, you can probably get your stock TRDOR up or down with locking diff. I turned around and did shafer trail instead.....glad I did, scenery much more impressive than long canyon. Gemini Bridges is no problem at all. I heard that they sometimes repair Long Canyon and ususally is no problem in stock truck. Ask around before you have to turn around. Again, I am sure you could make it, just depends on your level of expertise, and gamble with some body damage....real off camber spot. I saw an FJ with 3inch lift come down and was on 2 wheels, made me reconsider.

I did Long Canyon 2 weeks ago and yes, there were some spots down low (in the wash) that were a little rutted but not too bad. Above the rock tunnel had some soft sand but just had to keep speed up thru it. All in all it was a good run to take my parents on :p

If you're on stock tires though, I would suggest airing down a little bit to give yourself some better grip. I saw another guy airing down what I would guess were 33" tires. I didn't and didn't have any problems

Who's done Moab rim? One of my favourite trails. Did it in my jeep. I think I could get my truck up it with a few modifications

Thanks all, Moab Rim was done in a stock OR (see video above). Speaking of the video above, most of the trails in the video look like a 2WD can tackle it. I'll have to look up Long Canyon, Gemini bridges and Shafer Trail.

Has anyone done any of the popular trails around Moab? It's Moab! :)

Nothing Fancy but I just did eye of the whale heading from the park entrance to the other side. The end of teh trail has some rock crawling that is fairly tame, a few sections seem impassible with a stock Tacoma but my 3rd Gen OR got through it without a scratch.

We went out, fully stock except for Duratracs at stock size, and we did White Rim Trail, Gemini Bridges, Potash Road, and Shafer Switchbacks. The wife's first offroad experience ever occurred on Gemini Bridges and she did great. I highly recommend picking up the FunTreks book for Moab. Virtually anything that's Green or Blue in that book, you can do. I've been told that the stock truck can handle some Red trails like Hell's Revenge, but that there will be a ton of scraping along the way. I wouldn't recommend it. White Rim Trail is a must if you're going out there.

If you have any questions let me know. After doing Moab for the first time this summer, we'll be making the trip an annual thing from now on.

I did Gemini Bridges in a stock 2n Gen Baja that I had just picked up in Portland and was driving back to Albuquerque. Some of the trails are one-way, so check that out.

I was reading an article today, likely paid for by GM but it was comparing the zr1 or whatever it is to the trd pro.
lol they were ball licking to GM, I'll give gm credit its cool they come with a front locker and a diesel option.

But really the Off road/Pro are so much better. Even without a locker they are just so much more reliable. Considering how many overland rigs are often tacomas, clearly by sales etc they are the superior truck for off road. I never see the GM twins on trails, see tons of tacomas.

Besides the tacoma still has better ground clearance and approach angles so fuck the GM

Check out Mickey's Hot Tub, BUT dont do it, you will die.

This is true, Jeep guys are often caught offguard seeing a Tacoma rolling behind them.

Jeeps are probably the best off road vehicles in North America just dont like their reliability and they don't have enough cargo space for camping to me.

    Much prefer my taco.

I personally don't think a stock taco can typically do Moab Rim. I've seen the video and even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then. ... but if I had to drive the truck back home too.... that trail would be off my list. As well as several others. Now if you're hauling it out. ... knock yourself out.

My first time there I did part of Fins N Things in my 1st Gen 2 door, and realized it's a much bigger deal in person.

^^This, look the guy in the video doing Moab Rim was with one of the pioneers of Moab offroading and he was out spotting him. I am guessing whoever will be your copilot will not be nearly as knowledgeable about the trail and you will probably end up messing something on the truck up. If you want to have your truck last longer than Moab stick to the easier suggestions people have thrown out. Just because it says Off Road doesn't mean you should crawl it off the showroom floor.
