I notched the lip of the shell and came straight out. I actually had brackets fabricated to drop under the lip using angle iron, but the corner of the angle iron that sat on the bed cap was just enough to spread the base of the shell so that the flip up shell window wouldn't latch securely and created a small gap between the weatherproofing and edge of window...so I opted to come straight out...hope that makes sense.

Even if racks are rated at 450lbs how much would you realistically put on your shell?

Right now I'm looking to do a canoe that is in the range of 150lbs. I also have a Yakima roof top carrier I'm sure I'll use if I have the rack.

I really like what you did with your DIY rack. Thanks for posting the pics. I'm thinking of doing something similar. You didn't by any chance make yourself a set of sketchs/plans while doing it did you?

Sorry for the late reply, I’ll see what I can find as far as sketches. Here are some additional photos of the rack. My four brackets just attach to the rail inside the bed, which works fine, but I think I would have done a more traditional base with the angle iron that wraps the three side of the bed if I had a do over.

A guy at my apartment has a ladder rack just like this on his 2nd gen. I'll try to find his truck & snap a pic. His has plates that go between his shell & truck bed rails. His kinda looks like the one pic you posted from craiglists in your 1st post. As for me, I went with 2 rhino bars on my shell.
