Look up direct injection valve coking. BMW has been fighting it for years, then Chevy switched to direct injection on the Camaro V6 and V8 and found out why BMW media blasts valves. Chevrolet puts oil catch cans on the PCV system now, it's a bandaid fix for something everyone has known for years.

I for one, am super happy Toyota went with a port/direct injection engine. It was one of the main selling points for me. You get the efficient direct injection, and power of port injection, without the Valve mess. Valve coking didn't really worry me before, but I also didn't plan on keeping my Camaro forever. Now I don't have to worry about it.

And yes, it does sound like a small diesel engine at idle. I like the sound. It has more of a healthy roar up in the RPM's than my 3.6L Camaro did before the muffler and cat delete.

So @dyna962007 are you another who bought w/o a thorough test drive?

I mean they all sound the same, all the time. So its not like it happened a few days later.

He bought a vehicle without researching it then bought and installed a spacer lift without researching it. Flies by the seat of his pants kind of guy. He will fit right in.

yes the gas pedal feels laggy in the truck! i thought it would break in, the dealer told me it would get better with miles but it still drives terribly! also i had a couple software updates but they really didn't do any good

Ovtune has a perfect little solution for this, an yes these motors are noisy little bastards for sure..

x2 on the OVTune. He's working on the transmission stuff now, but it definitely makes a yuuuuge difference in throttle response vs. stock. Once the happy shifting stuff is worked out, I think many folks will jump on the tune wagon. Eventually a lot of folks will reach $750 worth of desperation to enjoy driving their $30-50k trucks.

you can also add that he didn't test drive properly so lets blame the truck for him not doing his due diligence researching before buying a new vehicle

This engine is different. If you push it, it goes. If you baby it, it will give you MPG and the acceleration will feel as if you were driving a VW beetle!
You gotta drive it for a while to love it... (62k miles)

How petty do you have to be complain about a little bit of valve clatter, that isn't very loud at all. This is normal and not a problem.

We should remember to that this engine was also used in a Lexus, and as everyone knows, Toyota only puts their worst components into the Lexus brand.

It's the injectors that sound that way. It's normal.

So called higher HP? It's quicker than the Tacoma it replaced. It's got the power, it's higher in the RPM band though. This engine runs like a sewing machine at higher RPM when compared to the 4.0. Part of the "anemic" performance is due to how the throttle plate is managed as it is drive by wire.

What we have here is a truck with a car engine and that's why things like wind, and road inclines have such a big effect on the drive train. It's a truck and it's heavy so the trans. has to downshift to get the rpm's high enough to move it. shifting manually helps a lot, and staying in 5th gear on the freeway helps too. I try not to let it bother me but I had a higher opinion of Toyota before this truck.

That might have a lot to do with the HUGE percentage of trucks that get driven like cars ??

Maybe my truck is a unicorn.....

It shifts nicely and hauls ass.

    It broke in very nicely.

Here's how to take care of those noises:

    1. Go drive a Subaru around for a week

    2. Get back in Tacoma

    3. Bask in how the Tacoma doesn't sound so weird anymore.
