This thread reminds me of how durable Toyotas are. I recall a 89-95 red Toyota on top gear Europe and the show anchored it at a dock at sea, leaving it there overnight! They had to find it, and fish it out of the ocean, but they brought it back to shore and got it running with wd-40 and crescent wrenches! They also tried blowing it up!,literally too, and it lived...early Toyota's must have drank from the fountain of youth.

BTW my wife made me turn down a 15k offer for my 1st gen at a gas station, needed the money at that time but keeping it was the best decision Iv'e ever made. I decided to keep it forever, my favorite truck!

KEEP IT !!! My '98 1st Gen was an awesome truck. If we hadn't moved to Colombia, I would still have it. It was a 2.7L 4 cyl, and it pulled a full 6' x 8' trailer over the Continental Divide several times no problem. If you need more power go ahead with the SC.

I'd consider it once it hit 200K. Seeing as mine is currently at 64K it might be a while though.

    Dear Everybody,

Here is my analysis of the first generation verse second generation Tacoma argument. Please keep in mind when reading this that the original poster already has a first generation.

First generation Tacomas are small so they can get into a lot of difficult places with some effort. Although, I will say this about their turning ability. Their turning radius is pretty lousy, and I have one. The three factory engines that came with them have all demonstrated that they are extremely reliable and dependable engines, and so have the two transmissions that came with them. These little trucks are not known by any stretch of the imagination as being at all comfortable especially on long trips, and this is coming from somebody who has owned for thirteen years. They are rated to tow when equipped with right engine combination up to 5,000 pounds, and they definitely can tow, but towing is not something they can easily do without some pretty major modifications. They don't stop real great when towing. First generations are just small trucks that have a relatively big engine for their size when equipped with the 3.4, and they ride hard.

Second generations are a much bigger and more comfortable truck than first generations. From what I have read, they are built just as well as the first generations. They have a ton of more options. Their stock seats are also quite a bit more comfortable, and they are a much better balanced truck. They can tow and haul much more than a stock first generation, and they will do it much more comfortably.

    Good Luck
    Paul

    P.S. I am a first generation admirer.

Paul forgot third gens. Third Gens are cool looking, have neat doodads on the interior and some technology assists for inexperienced drivers off-road (think bowling alley bumpers). Personally I always buy used well kept vehicles, the lure of new is always nice and lingers even for a few months after buying, but ultimately those nice feelings come at a price. If your ultimate goal is comfort and towing then I would go with a full size like others suggested. If you're just wanting a good 4x4 vehicle with lower mileage and a some updates I'd go with a reasonably priced 2nd gen that suits your needs and upgrade the brakes. A new 3rd gen would be an impulse buy to me.

Yeah the first gen look is the cleanest imo. Hate the new tacomas coming out with lights poking really far. The damn things are huge now too. I drive on a lot of two tracks. Having a smaller truck is a must.

It's kind of like having a choice between 2 ladies, and one of them might be "better looking" in the classic sense with a modern wardrobe, nice jewelry, primped hair, etc... but is dumber than a bag of rocks and listens to crappy hipster music.

The other one is still good looking, but doesn't usually wear makeup, and typically wears jeans and an old Van Halen (not van hagar) t-shirt. She can change a tire and kills her own meat.

You'll be fine with a 2400 lb dry weight trailer. V6/auto is rated to 5000 lbs so you are way under the limit even once you gear up. I would definitely keep it and be a happy camper...literally and figuratively.

But then you have to be a 100 series guy...and that's the only thing worse than being an 80 series guy....

    Sell my 1st gen...
Let's put it this way, the only person who's taking possession of my truck (assuming it's still in non-totaled condition from an accident) will be my son.

    P.S. He's a month old...

Selling a 1st gen is like selling a pre-64 Winchester bolt action. You just don't do it because the newer stuff just ain't up to par! You keep a 1st gen until it falls apart while driving down the road although with a the Winchester you just have to replace the barrel every 50 years if necessary.

Unless the frame rusts out on a 1st gen it always makes sense to keep it. The new stuff just isn't as good.

I recently purchased a boat that required a full size truck. If you are really set, you can find full size trucks on CL for a decent price. I picked up a clean Chevy 2500 hd with 6.0L for $5k. It's clean and only has 135k on the clock. Whatever you do, keep the 1st gen!

I think about the same thing sometimes about selling my 2002 and getting a second Gen. I think I would only possibly sell it to someone in the family so I could buy it back. I do that a lot. My truck runs great and has been one of the best purchases I ever made. Its not going anywhere soon with 131K on the clock but there is a 2004 with 43K for sale in my area. They are asking quite a bit for it but if I got that one I wouldn't get another truck for 20 years. lol. My vote keep the one you have.

Hello your not the only person I have read on the forum that's done this. Just wondering if there were things you didn't like about the 2nd gen. My friend has a pretty nice one and I like it if I was in the market. I am definitely fine with mine right now though.

I still have my second gen but it is used only to transport my mountain bike, I just like how the first gen feels. To me it feels more like a truck should where as my 08 feels more like a sedan, and I do prefer the smaller size of the first gen over the second gen. Also when I am in my 08 I worry about it being heavily scratched or dented where as in my 03 it's just part of its nature as it is meant to be driven and enjoyed.
