Hey guys. My 17yo son just called me and said he's smelling something burning when he pulled into the garage and that noise is coming when clutching. He said it's happened a few times, so there must be a problem. Is there a decent guide out there for diagnosing clutch issues? We're a big moto family so I can tell when a clutch is slipping and going out. What about throw out bearings, pilot bearings, master cylinders? I'm reading about these items but is there a diagnosis process to tell which is the problem? Didn't see anything in the pinned threads.

His Tacoma is a 95', 4WD with the 6 cylinder, manual trans and 230k miles.

I'll get home later this evening and see what I can find.

    Thanks!

if it smells like burned brakes its clutch. If you are going to change the throw out bearing and pilot bearing may as well do the clutch while you are there. Typically they dont smell but usually screech or sound bad. If its slipping in 5th gear then also another indicator clutch is going bad.

Probably time for a clutch. I personally would recommend a Marlin crawler clutch kit.

Thanks guys. I think you are right. We don't know the history on this truck and we put a lift and 33"s on it last year so I've been expecting clutch issues at some point. I just priced the entire kit with new master and slave cylinders and it's not bad. I'll look into the Marlin Crawler. I've heard good things about that.

Shouldn't need to replace the master and slave as long as they are in good working order.

Okay. I'll check them out first. Thanks for the feedback.
