Fuel light is supposed to come on around 4 gallons... So for most of us 60+ should be possible.

Light comes on at 1/8 I think? No need to panic since you probably have 3 gallons left.

And that's why I've only ever seen the light once.

The gas light. I mean. I'm still totally in the dark....

The fuel stop thing i get but running your rig below empty in no way benefits you in terms of fuel economy. By doing this routinely you are going to need a new pump in a few years. The fuel cools them and by running it that low you are allowing them to heat up far beyond intended design

Grandpa rebuilds tractor engines and carbs as a hobby in retirement. Little side money I guess while he's still able.

I always figured it kept the tank from collecting water and crud. I'm never far from a gas station. I have never run out but when I do it will definitely be my fault.

Either way, I have over 485,000 km on the truck and I get around 17-18 mpg with 91 Octane (no ethanol) fuel. Never touched the fuel system other than putting some injector cleaner in a few times a year.

Crazy how so many people run their vehicles almost dry before stopping at a gas station. Pretty much the majority of people I know do this which I think is crazy. For me, I never let my tank go below half, just a habit I’ve always had.

Not sure about 2nd gens but I know that the fuel pumps on 1st gens rely on having fuel in the tank to keep the pump cool...running the tank dry is not good for the pump.

Anyone have any actual data on fuel pumps overheating, and not just internet wisdom? I'm talking about running till the fuel light comes on, not running the tank dry.

    Asking for a friend.

    What's hard to interpret?

Take something liquid cooled, remove the liquid in whole or in part and two things happen.

Either it doesn't cool at all, or it doesn't cool efficiently. Both increase wear and decrease life because the device isn't running inside its design requirements.

Still confused? Turn on your garbage disposal and let it run in a dry sink for awhile.

Also you're routinely sucking up the random debris and shit that accumulates over time on the very bottom of the gas tank.

Installed new hood with "hood-scoop". Installed Predator Side Steps. Replaced front chrome grill with customized color matched (Desert Sand Mica) grill with added TOYOTA lettering (also in matched color), installed and secured tailgate anti-theft devices. Also installed a new external TPMS monitor for all 4 tires.
If you really need to find out that bad then drive around until you actually do run out of gas then check and mark your dash gas gauge, then you'll be sure and know for a fact the true "emptyness" reading on your Tacoma's gas gauge.

Those are true words of wisdom there, spoken by your grandpa and yes it still holds true to this very day.

That's basically the same thing that I've always told my wife and daughter when they are out and about, "don't allow the gas tank to go below half a tank of gas if you can avoid it, and definitely never allow the gas gauge get to the "E" mark under any circumstances."

Sorry, I don't have a garbage disposal. And you didn't supply any actual evidence, so there's that. I just asked a simple question.

You have a liquid cooled truck, yes?

Drain it, drive around, follow up with us later on how cooling systems work (or don't when they're not allowed to properly cool something). You want to hold something before you believe it's real, so this should work perfectly.

Your logic is flawed, Spock. Again, I asked a simple question, which you can't seem to answer.
