I kinda lost some excitement for the newer hiluxs since finding out they haven't been being made in Japan for awhile now.

Even the current model has only now been released for sale in Japan this month.

There is a guy/company in San Antonio who buys up Hi-Lux's from central america and swaps all the running gear into Taco's. Has a long waiting list apparently but once done everything works as it should, dash lights etc etc. It's not cheap but if you have a good Taco and spend money on his $20K conversion it still waaaaaay less money that a new Taco. http://dieseltoys.com/

20k total isn't bad, my dream is to have a regular cab short bed crawler, so maybe it could use a D4D if/when it happens.. or the turbodiesel v8..

Taking a look again it's like $25K but still a new Taco here in Canada quad cab with some nice extras is $45K Even with the US $ 25% difference I'd still be OK with it. My truck D4D......Hell Yea!

The new hilux is ugly compared to tacoma.
So ugly that the current ranger outsells it in New Zealand. Toyota was always on top down there until last couple of years.
My friend down there has a 14 diesel turbo ranger its pretty cool it has alot of torque but isn't as cool as the Taco.old hilux's are cool

I always thought the EPA prevented non approved vehicles and engines for 21 years. Makes sense since a half cut is not a vehicle but it still has an engine. I would have thought it was dancing around the rules but must not be the case because there are just too many newer imported diesel motors here.

I drove one of those across South Africa. It was soooo fucking slow it drove me fucking nuts. Never ever would I buy one unless I never drove on highways.

The newer ones have a Turbo V8 but I think you can add a Turbo Kit to the old naturally aspirated models and at least make it less painfully slow.

The one I drove was I6 turbo diesel. South Africa is full of hills/mountains. Just like western US. And I swear I could have walked up faster

4lo and front and rear lockers were fun tho

Could try contacting these guys and see if they still do diesel swaps. They used to have a bunch of converted 4Runners on their site for sale [now gone] for around $25K. The 1st gens are a little closer to a HiLux than the 2nd or 3rd gen...frame is "mostly" boxed. Since Cummins now has that 2.8 crate engine, probably a better way to go than trying to import a half cut....that or do a LS swap, the Chevy engine is probably the best bang for the buck swap.

And crash tests, the trucks here fold like paper. Some of the metal seems thinner. They are less money and made in a market for people that make less money. I've seen plenty of accidents and they don't look like they hold up very good. I have arb bumpers on my truck and next year an exo cage.
