I love my 2.7 Access Cab! I've had both a 2016 TRD Offroad and now my SR and I enjoy driving the SR more. I have the manual and that's the only way to go with this engine. Only time it feels underpowered is going up mountains, but as long as you keep the rpm's above 3k it does just fine in the hills.
Just be realistic with your expectations though, it's not fast, not meant to tow a bunch, but if you're just looking for a solid dependable truck, you'd be happy.

Loved my 09 4 cyl, like others have said, unless towing. It did it, but wasn't happy. If it's a daily driver, and not hauling/carrying a lot of weight it will be fine.

I had an '08 Tacoma 4x4 with the 2.7 and 5speed manual. I always felt frustrated by the lack of power and wished it was a v6. Zero to 60 was about 27 minutes.

It is a solid, reliable engine, but definitely lacking in highway performance in this day and age.

2.7 for the win the engine has pretty much been the same since the original 3RZ tried and true. Plus when you have the truck for ten year and want more power do see below! I’m learning how well these motors take BOOST9D262608-55E0-41A1-B9E1-DF627C47AADB.jpg

I'm loving my 4-banger, zero regrets! I commute in aggressive nyc/long Island traffic, and it's got plenty of power, same for the beach driving I do.

The only reason I'd go with a 6cly would be for increased towing capacity.

Love my four-cylinder 2.7 4x4 automatic access cab with utility package. The automatic comes with 4.30 axle ratio and I feel the combination is perfect. So far it looks like everybody loves their 2.7 and we had one complaint from a 3.5 , 6 cylinder person in this four-cylinder thread. The six-cylinder buyers just are always so unhappy.

I love my 4 cyl 4x4 Auto. I was gifted this truck and was nervous about not having the power of a v8 that my dad always had in his trucks but it's does absolutely everything that a 6 cylinder can do except towing capacity. Now that being said, this truck can tow. I've towed 20 ft boats for medium length trips and pull heavy ass jeeps, suburbans, and big jacked up trucks out of mud holes all the time. The truck comes with 4.10 gears which compensates very nicely for lack of HP. And the 4 LO in this truck I swear could pull a house down.
It's not going to pull a horse trailer or a 30 ft contender, but for the average man it's just fine. Not to meantion the engine itself is easy as hell to work on because of its simplicity and size.
Off-road it kicks ass, unless you plan on pre running at 70 mph all the time. The engine runs cooler than a v6 off-road, provides plenty of power in first and second gear and low range to climb over most obstacles, and you are burning less gas than the v6 ( because let's face it, most off-roading, depending on where you are and what you do, doesn't see speeds past 20-30 mph).
Mpg is great on the highway and in town and as long as your not trying to race your buddies in said jacked up trucks, you'll be perfectly happy.

So you came to this thread to tell us that we should be complaining about our four cylinders because you're not happy with your six cylinder. OK , To each their own. I guess lol

Just remember... keep in mind what you plan on using the truck for. My brother bought a mid size V6 truck to haul is camper (all he uses if for) and he is on his 3rd camper and still not happy with how the truck pulls it. He is now looking at full size trucks. General chasing around and light hauling the 2.7 5 spd is a great combo. If you need more of a truck, look elsewhere.

I would buy mine again if I could go back. The 2.7 and 5 speed is an amazing combo. I use mine mostly to commute and haul some things around from time to time. It will easily haul up to the payload capacity. I wouldn't buy it if I towed more than a small trailer regularly.

If you are even thinking you might get power envy just save the extra money for the 6. It is more expensive to do it twice than to just get the 6 the first time.

not complaining. I test drove it, knew it was a bit underpowered but oh well.

Its not a problem to me but I wouldn't be opposed to having more power in the lower end. On the trails in 4lo its fine just on the highway and city could use a bit more pep.
Point I was trying to make is if the V6 feels underpowered the 4cyl must feel really sluggish.
Its a heavy truck for such low power.

there's others with the 4cyl that said the same thing.

And like many have said it depends what you plan on using it for.
With all my armour, larger tires and the fact its a DCSB, it could use more power in the lower ends. But if the 4cyl is geared better it might not feel as sluggish as the V6, the low end of it sucks.

Best bet for OP would be to test drive both and see which he prefers. For me I had no option anyways, DCSB Off road is only offered as V6 here.

After driving a Ranger 4x4 for 16 yrs and getting 16-18 mpg I concluded that I didn't use 4wd often enough to justify it(no more ski trips)and now that the AC has the back doors the extra cab didn't coupled with the increased legroom and they stopped making the Ranger, I made the move to a taco. Yes it's relatively underpowered but I'm not a race car driver and even loaded my with tools it still gets me there. The possibility of getting 25+ mpg on long trips and certainty of averaging 22-23 saves me coin that at my age looms much larger than the envy I feel for the much nicer trucks I see here and around town. It's a personal choice that thankfully we each still get to make. I can take some consolation in the money saved allows me more freedom to do mods either to the truck or to other things in my life and I get to shift gears myself again. Weigh your options against the consequences in both mileage and maintenance(tire cost and suspension wear) vs OR capabilities and whether you'll use them(or not if you simply want a cool looking beast!) and don't look back until it's time for another new vehicle.

Getting a 4 cylinder in a pickup is a type of reverse compensation.

Well crap :)!!! I may need two 4cly's then!
Or does that make a v8, and make this a double reverse conundrum ?
