Use a gasket from an oil filter to seal the male adapter onto the gas can. That worked for me.

The male adapter has tapered threads. Wouldn't even come close to mating with the spout surface of the MFC.

The tapered adapter is to increase sealing against the threads absent a gasket. However if a non tapered piece was used instead then the spout could be screwed down until the o-ring sealed the connection.

The internal threads are designed into the MFCs so that they were backwards compatible with previous generations of spouts already in the military system. When I was in we were still using the clamp-on spouts a decade after the MFCs were introduced.

None of the military spouts depend on the threads to seal and have some type of gasket in them. The old GI screw-on spouts used a flat gasket to seal, while the clamp-on ones had the aforementioned expanding rubber plug. Even the current issue, exterior screw-on spouts have an internal o-ring to seal it.

The military went to the external type as it is exponentially easier to get tight and to loosen afterwards (without a tool) then the internal screw-on's ever were.

Anyone got a link to the external spouts?

Good to know about the clamp on style. Like I said I'd like to test it out for S&Gs.

I found this yesterday browsing Amazon, this is 1" valve, not sure if the hose will fit into the filler neck restrictor.
But I know what you mean, make it nice and quick to just dump it in.
Unfortunately, I'm a lazy ass, I don't want to undo my ratchet strap that holds the gas can on the basket.

Search ebay and Amazon. Or do a google search. They run about $25 or so.

The mil-surp externals will not work with modern vehicles unless they are diesel fueled as the spout is too big to fit. You might be able to source an external to fit a gasoline powered car from Canada though. Or rig up an end of spout adapter.

Something for people to keep in mind, using that tapered adapter and screwing it down tight to avoid leaks will eventually ruin the threads on the MFC. The plastic of the spout is stronger then the poly of the can and each time it gets screwed down tight it reams out the threads in the hole ever so slightly. That is why the use of a straight adapter that incorporates an o-ring or gasket of some kind for sealing is a better option in the long run.

Cans arrived today and despite looking beat up on the outside (which I expected as I ordered his less pretty cans) they all seem serviceable and have complete, unbroken caps. Very pleased with cans and the fast shipping.
