I saw this 2005 PreRunner SR5 in 2011, on eBay.
I wanted a double cab, but the price was too good to pass up.
She had a 5-speed and manual windows, which is what I was looking for, plus came with Tundra/Sequoia alloy performance rims.
I had a 3rd party inspect and they gave me the go- I was sold.
That weekend I was on a one way flight to Ft. Lauderdale.
I took the opportunity to visit my Dad in SC for a few days, before the drive back across country to WA.
That's when I realized I had overlooked something very important...

    First mod: CRUISE CONTROL lol
After I arrived at Dad's, I went online to find if it was possible to add cruise to my new truck.
I discovered Tacoma World. I hadn't even had her for 24hrs lol

After CRUISING across country and registering her in WA, I decided to make a bracket for the front license plate.
I didn't want to drill the front bumper on my new truck :)

I updated the Head unit and added a GROM unit for bluetooth. Thanks @CJH9980

    FJ cup holders.
    Cup Holder.jpg

I went fishing/camping a few times, I was really destroying the carpet. It wasn't even nice in the first place, so I replaced it and got Weather Tech floor mats.

While I had the seats out, I removed the cloth and machine washed them twice with special auto upholstery detergent.

I got tired of unlocking the doors with keys, I really wanted keyless entry.
I soon found out the truck wasn't wired for it.
I ended-up replacing my wire harness with one from a wrecked truck with all the electronic options.
I added the door harnesses and actuators, then installed Toyota's RS3200+ alarm system /w key fob. Thanks @fritzthecat

DTRL harness and relay. Thanks @earnesje

    IMG_026910.jpg

I soon got the Satoshi Grill, thanks @HomerTaco.

After I deleted the chrome grill, I thought smoke headlights from a Sport would look better.

To wrap up the new look, I updated the tail lights.

After doing a few oil changes, I installed a Fumoto valve, like I use on the tow tractors at work.
I also decided I should clean the MAF and throttle body.

Converted over to Red Line transmission and differential oil.

Replaced the cylinder head cover gasket.

    Deleted the secondary air filter.

    Installed a Curt 13323 hitch.

Then she sat at Dad's for 3 years while I defended freedom in Japan.

After I returned home from overseas, I visited Dad for 3 weeks and picked her up.

The sun did a number on the plastic handles, so I painted those. Added a tube step too.

    IMG_2186.jpg
    IMG_2187.jpg

I really like the utility and look of the LED blinker mirrors, so I painted a pair and installed those.

    Boy, did I miss her!
    IMG_2262.jpg

Soon after arriving to Hawaii I volunteered for a beach cleanup at Sandy Beach. I was following my buddy's Jeep Wrangler out of a dirt/rock lot back to the road. He didn't realize I was following him and took the opportunity to play in the sand. Needless to say, I got STUCK !
Him and a few others razzed me about having a truck without 4x4.
At that moment, I made my mind up that I was going to convert to 4x4, something I've been thinking about since 2012.

    4x4 Conversion Thread
    IMG_0219.jpg
    IMG_0358.jpg

I decided I didn't really need a locker in back, but a LSD sure would be nice.
    Eaton TrueTrac time!

    IMG_0488.jpg

While reading how others did the 4x4 convert, I kept running across 1st Gens with manual hubs.
The forum had already figured out the hub/bearing assembly, all I needed was a CV joint.
After making a few purchases and taking measurements, I designed a manual hub CV Joint that would accept the 2nd Gen shaft.
Manual Hub CVs were in production!

    The PreRunner's shocks/struts are quite stiff, so I picked up a 3rd Gen Sport's shocks/struts for a softer ride and a 1" lift/level. Thanks @crispy77

I wouldn't have been able to do any of these mods without the knowledge and goodwill of TacomaWorld and it's members.

Got a hot lead on replacing the 5th gear set with one from a dump truck in Australia lol.
But run into an issue with the trans actually being different than the ones with sold in Australia, then though they are called the same model number. However, I think I have it figured out, I've got a few parts in the mail from Japan that I think will work. I probably won't swap these in until the supercharger is complete, though.

MPG. I got the supercharger because my 2TR doesn't handle hills too well. I don't feel right in 4th on the interstate.
If I feel the truck will have the power after I install it, then I'll install the new 5th gear. I should have waited to purchase that but curiosity got the better of me lol

I had this idea stuck in my head that you couldn't do manual hubs on a 2nd gen without some major work, but it doesn't look like you had to fab anything. Time to make a shopping list!

edit: nvm, I saw your thread. Kinda expensive but very tempting.

What an awesome project. The Gen2 single cab 4x4 MT's are my favorite, but this is amazing. Great work!

Hey @05Taco4x4, I like your truck! I did a 4x4 conversion this summer on a 5 speed manual 2nd gen as well. All the other 4x4 conversions I have seen are for V6/auto trucks. On your fj cruiser shift boot, was there any modification required, or did it just pop in where the stock shift boot goes in the plastic console?

The FJ boot doesn’t just snap in, I actually spent a lot of time on that thing.
The metal wire within it isn’t as ridgid as the Tacoma’s, so I reshaped it to fit.
I cut the wire from the Tacoma’s boot and put it in the picture for comparison. Notice how I folded the corners at the top.

    95175A7A-FBEB-4B07-9550-75EEAD283F10.jpg

I pulled the boot inside out, like this:

    9CCF2F67-708D-415B-B3EB-E76E8017049C.jpg

I placed the old wire on top of the felt, then sprayed 3m industrial glue on the felt, wire and an inch up the boot backing. I let it tack, then folded the boot backing over the wire and felt. I let it dry in this position for a day. The next day I removed the boot from the plastic, pulled it right side out, then reinstalled. The wire gives the felt ridgidity. It’s working great. I imagine it would be very easy for an auto interior shop to cut the FJ wire out and sew the Tacoma wire in- this would be the cleanest IMHO.
The FJ boot doesn’t have the felt on the backing like the Tacoma boot does. I haven’t transferred that over yet, but I will.

    Thanks for the compliment.

Okay I see what you did. I just cut a hole in my original shift boot and then had my mom sew up a miniature boot for the t case:D
