hello fellow Tacoma lovers, I have been seriously looking at tires the last few weeks. It's time for some new shoes. I was originally going to upgrade my older 16" ProComp rims to 17", but a bonus at work fell through so I'm sticking to the ProComps. Which changed the tire I really want the Ridge grappler, but their not offering it in 16". So I'm looking at the Trail grappler, and there isn't any recent review of these tires. I know they preform well off-road, but what about on road? Tread wear? Noise? I would appreciate any input. Also any other tire suggestions. I've looked at toyos, coopers, duramacs, BFG: ko2 & km. I'm leaning towards the Nittos...

    Thanks.

I just went through decision making on tires a few weeks ago. I had a couple choices, but went with duratracs. Completely happy with my purchase.

Ridge grapplers are more of a hybrid tire like the ST Maxx and the Duratracs. The Trail grapplers are more a mud terrain tire like the KMs and X’3s.

So take the ridge grapplers and make them more capable offroad and worse at every aspect on road.

I have Maxx’s and like them a lot. Dead quiet and just about as smooth as my Honda Accord.

It just depends on how much drivability you want to sacrifice for looks and off-road capability. I came from KM2’s and would honestly never go back. Maybe it’s just BFG but they were ear piercing loud towards the end, were a rough ride even at 30psi, and didn’t even clear mud that well.

Are you sure you can’t trade the 16”s for a set of 17”s?

I am currently running a set of 285/70r17 Trail grapplers on my truck. I have C load on my truck which is 6 ply. As far as off road they excel. I have dropped them to 20psi to run on sand and they performed flawless. No spinning no anything. I have run them at 38 psi on a wet mossy mountain trail and they did great. Only spun loose once, but that was not the tires fault I picked the wrong line. Now for the on road, I have thrown everything I can at these tires on dry pavement. Running curvy mountain runs at a fairly decent pace and the tires don't even make a noise. Wet pavement they do pretty good. Just have to watch the gas in curves. Noise is normal for a mud tire, I wouldn't say it is unbearable but it is noticeable. Nothing the radio won't drown out. Over 60mph they turn to a higher pitch whine. But still not something a radio won't drown out. They do ride a but rough due to the fact they are mud tires. I did not expect them to be smooth. As far as read wear, I have 15,000 miles on mine with a handful of off road experience. The "whiskers" are still on the side. You can just barely notice they are starting to wear. I do rotate every 5,000 miles. Now only problem with them (and it's not really a problem it's just personal preference) EVERYBODY runs them on thier brodozers or thier lifted diesels with American force rims. Again just personal preference. I'm certainly not going to get rid of them just because of that. All in all you can't go wrong with them. Discount Tire Direct is where I got mine. Best price on the internet I could find.

And a picture for good measure
